Have been to Kew and Here are the results. Linda, Lady Liverpool, Jeanette Stockwell, Marie C and Joyce There are no Birth marriage and Death records at Kew. However I did look up these requests on IGI,FreeBMD and Ancestry before I went but found nothing. Tricia I checked the Met Police records and there seems to be records missing. All the Sir names beginning with G started with warrant numbers of around 10000 so unfortunately PC Warner Green was not there. I did check all these records incase his number was wrong and there was no sign of him. Sorry. Lady of the Manor I had a look for John Pover service record and unfortunately I could not find it. most of them got burnt. Natalie Sorry I was running out of time but I did have a quick look for him on the War medals with no luck. Jacqui Legge I went through all the original documents (WO97/1362) for Alfred but there was no sign of him. sorry. Joan Had a look for enlistment records (adm188 256, and ADM 188 1144) and War medals for James and Matthew Little and they weren't there. The good news is for Teresa in Wirral. I managed to find 4 out of the 5 names you gave me so I now need your email address and give me a bit of time to write up the notes. I am so sorry for those I was unable to find information for but if it is any consilation Neither myself or my husband found anyone we were looking for either. Having said all that it was a really enjoyable day. Jane

Hello Jane, That's a fine offer! If you don't already have too many requests ,can you find the papers for this Royal Marines Light Infantry man-James Little 1869 Plymouth D Company .My grandfather was a Matthew James Little born 1880 in Stow Peebles near Edinburgh. He enlisted in the RMLI prior to 1901 when I found him on the HMS Niobe in Gibraltar.I also have a photo of him in uniform taken in Plymouth in 1915. Many thanks for any possible help. Joan

Jeanette Sorry they do not have parish records at Kew. The best thing I can suggest is to ask for a look up on the 1841 census (He is on it living in Northumberland) then send for the birth cert of a child born after 1837 this will give the mothers maiden name. Sorry My membership to Ancestry has just expired so I can't do the look up for you. I have tried IGI and there is nothing on their for the marriage. Jane

Hello Jane Thanks for the very kind offer. According to his death cert my GG Gandfather Alfred Legge was an army pensioner. I'm not sure of the regiment but think possibly the Royal Engineers as his brother served with them. And he was probably discharged around 1871/72. According to the NA website discharge records for the Engineers at this time would be under WO97/1362. If you have time could you take a look and see if he is there please. Many thanks again for the offer. Jacqui

Joyce Van Der Hoeven I Take it you have her marriage cert. Does it say if her father was deceased? I found a birth for an Ada in Thorne in Lincolnshire but the fathers name was wrong. There is no sign of her on any of the census which makes me think something is not quite right. Jane

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 9 Apr 2007 12:56

Gary The National Archives comprise what might be called 'National Records' - that is, official records which are nationwide in their importance, rather than localised stuff. County Records Offices contain important records at County level, such as rates books, details of local history, etc. Local Archives Centres contain what might be classed as trivia, of local interest only. However, there is no clear demarcation between these three levels of archives and to get the best, then you need to visit all of them! The NA, and most County Records Offices, have an online catalogue, so you can get a flavour of what you will find there. And don't forget, there are literally thousands of other depositories which do not fall into any of these categories - A2A lists many, but not all, of these. OC
