Sorry Mhairi, I have all the census after they were married but I don't have anything on Mary Ann Duffy or her parents at all, apart from her fathers name Patrick Duffy. Mary Ann Duffy's parents came from Co Armagh, Ireland. Betty |

Hi Mhairi, This is where I am stuck, all I know is Mary Ann Duffy was aged 21 in November 1866 and was married in Durham and is listed as a Labourer in a paper mills. Patrick her father is listed as a labourer. Thats it apart from marrying Thomas Collins age 25. Betty |

Hey Betty Am still looking for any possibles. I think you can discount the one Kaz gave you though, its the 1880 census for America :) Are there any clues in the children's names? Mhairi |

Hi Joy, I think Kas may have found the correct one I do know if the father worked in the Paper mill, not sure what year the census Kas gave me either. It does look like the correct family though as I think Mary Ann was called after her mother. Betty |

Forget 'mine' then, Betty, because, if the IGI is correct, 'my' Patrick Duffy married Hannah Donohough in 1830 in St Leonards, Shoreditch, London. |

Hi Kaz, I can't tel lif thats the family or not, I haven't been able to find them before, I looked in Berwick and Scotland but with just the fathers and daughters name I couldn't find a Mary Ann of the correct age. DEREK:- I don't know enough about this family just that they came from Ireland and her name and fathers name from marriage certificate. Betty |

Betty As they were a Catholic family you won't find them in the OPRs. That may mean you having to search the registers at the Catholic archives at Columba House, Edinburgh or the copies at NAS. Perhaps there's a FHS which has done some work on Catholic records in the likely area? Denis |

Hi again Joy and Margaret, I think she was born in Scotland but I can't prove this as not listed in births, and I also somehow think her parents came from Ireland to Scotland too as I haven't been able to find Patrick Duffy in an English census either. I think Mary Ann may have been called after her mother but I am not sure about anything as I a completely lost with this one. Betty |

Sorry about this but on some later census it says she Mary Ann was born in Scotland not Berwick on Tweed. I have check the birth on OPR's on Scotlands people but can't find the birth in Scotland but then they didin't have to register the birth then. Betty |

Sorry, Betty, didn't see what you said about 1871. It was the only likely one I could find. |

Could she have lied about her age when she married and only been 16? Also could they have said she was born Scotland as Berwick on Tweed passed back and forth quite often. I know, that's a lot of ifs but there's one in 1861 living in Conside & Knitsley, Durham, born 1850, Scotland and parents are Patrick & Mary Ann. Margaret |

In 1851 there is a Mary A Duffy, b about 1844, parents Patrick and Hannah, in Deptford. Parents are from Ireland, but birth places for the children are not given. I'll look in 1861, too. |
