Appreciate a Marriage look up

St Silas registers are probably at Lancs County Record Office - if so, you can either email then and ask for a copy of the marriage entry - this will cost next to nothing. OR - you could ask someone to look it up for you (on Records Board) and that would cost you nothing at all. Buit as Reggie says, a birth cert for one of the children will have her maiden name on it, and you really ought to get that first, just in case I AM wrong! (In which case, I shall give up family history for ever and take up basket weaving) OC

I'm not sure why the poster seems to want to complicate the issue..........buying the birth cert of any of the offspring will tell him MMN. That would no doubt only serve to confirm OC's finding.............. Reg

Joe, I bet you a gold clock that the marriage I quoted is the marriage of your John and Ursula! If it isnt, I'll send you a cheque for £7, as well as a gold clock. No one is suggesting that he remarried, just that her name has been wildly mistranscribed by transcribers unfamiliar with the name Ursula, probably compounded by a strong accent when giving the name to a clerk or enumerator. I have an ancestor named John - who doesn't - and believe it or not I found him transcribed as IOLO. If they can get a simple name like John completely wrong, then they can do anything with a name like Ursula! OC

Joe, Many many men remarried, often very soon after the first wife died. They needed help to raise the children! For various reasons, women were often not put off by the job of taking on children and then having more of their own. Life as a single woman was often very difficult, having a husband gave you a certain standing in the community, and also of course security. Sylvia (in Canada)

I have seen Ursula transcribed in four ways:- ORSBY, OSLEY , Usala and Ursula I believe all for the same person, same year of birth and that a19th Cent. Irish Catholic man with a load of children would not be changing wives in mid stream, In the 19th Cent where wives were treated almost as slaves, why would any woman want to step into such a situation? This jumped off the page at me: Marriage John Magin to Horsley Daly - 1851 Liverpool St Silas. Obviously a mistranscription (or misunderstanding!). Ursula/Osby/Horsley all fit nicely together, especially in a rich Liverpool Irish acent. OC
