JOHN GORONWY MATHIAS. Trying to find more details and pictures of my great grandfather John Goronwy Mathias, b. 1842 in Manchester but lived from an early age at Penrhyn-coch near Aberystwyth. Joined Baptist Church and became a preacher. In 1873 he moved to Aberdare, becoming a member at Ynys-lwyd, and thence in 1874 to the Rhymney Valley, taking pastoral charge of the small church of Bethania, Troedrhiw'r-fuwch. He subsequently held the pastorates of Ramah and Erwood, Brecknock (1875-1881) where his wife Hannah died, Llansantffraid and Glyndyfrdwy (1881-1887), and, after a period of retirement at Corwen until 1893, the English Church at Pontlottyn where he died 18 February 1895, aged 53 and was taken back to Erwood for burial. He is best remembered for his literary activities. He was for some time in partnership with T. Edmunds, Printer, at Corwen; he was the founder and editor of eight numbers of 'Y Llenor Cymreig' ('The Welsh Literary Man') which were published at Corwen between January 1882 and October 1883. These details are from Dictionary of Welsh Biography. He was married to a Hannah Bevan or Rees (according to LDS IGI), and had at least two children: James who died in Australia (two children Doris and Aylwyn), and Evan Llewellyn, my mother's father, a master baker, b. at Llangyfelach just north of Swansea (Abertawe), in January 1871 d. Llangollen in November 1933. |
