Trying to find the forebears or siblings of John Lewthwaite who was pressganged at Whitehaven, Cumberland, into the navy (HMS Reknown) in the 1770's. He served in American Waters during the War of Independence, married a Devon girl and had a son in Devonport who is a direct ancestor of mine. There is a family story that some influential people tried to make contact with John's grandson who had been left an orphan (cholera epidemic in 1830's) when he, William, was working at Devonport Dockyard - he hid himself because he was poorly dressed. Any light on that story would be appreciated. David Henwood |
