SMITH I am trying to trace some of my ancestors but with a surname of Smith am not sure how easy that will be !!!!! Great grandparents: from Lewisham, Kent, England, but travelled around a lot. William Henry Smith 1869-1911 he worked at a train staion as a porter. Married to Mary Ann Hinchey d. 1910 ( I believe that she originally came from Ireland?) They had six children: John b. 1899? Emma Mary 1901-1983 Joseph 1902 Joined British Navy 'HMS Veddetta D69 destroyer 'V' class. No record of him returning home. Michael Henry 1905-1972 Was sent to Bishop Brown's Home for orphans before being sent to Canada in 1921. George Joseph 1909-1986 Was also sent to Bishop Brown's Home and then to Canada in 1924. Dorothy 1910-1980? John the eldest brother put both the younger boys into the orphanage after their mother Mary died giving birth to Dorothy. The address given for the family at that time was 24 Speedwell Street, (off High Street ) Deptford. I am in contact with my relatives who are still in Canada and are the sons of the two boys sent there in the 20's. If anyone can offer any help I would be very grateful. Perhaps even someone who knew of this address and the family at the time they lived there approx 1920's. Or maybe any living relatives to this branch of the family. Thank you.
