Trying to find Johnson

Elizabeth Report 7 Feb 2004 22:57

Thomas Johnson, born Kingston, Staffs., 1845, son of Joseph Johnson and Elizabeth Elsmore, married Emma Buxton in 1870 in Stoke. They had six children in and around Staffs., then more from 1897 in Toronto. Emma was great-aunt to my grandfather Jesse Buxton born 1886, who went to Canada with his father Charles Buxton, born 1862, Albert Street, Newcastle-under-Lyme, and his mother Sarah Jane(nee Williams, born 1863 in Seagrave Street, Newcastle, and his sister Ethel. They must have gone from Staffs after March 1887, but Sarah was back with the 2 children by 1891, living with her widowed mother Elizabeth Williams (nee Lawton) in Castle St., Newcastle. Family lore says that Charles went out to work on the railways and died out there of typhoid. I don't know which port they left from, nor which one they went to, which is a problem! It seems too much of a coincidence that Emma and Thomas went to Canada at about the same time. Charles was an Apprentice Pawnbroker in 1881, so hadn't a lot to lose by emigrating. Thomas and Emma's children born in the UK were: Martha Ellen (married Edward Gaskin), Francis Joseph, Florence Emma (married William Payne), Thomas Jesse (married May Mackie), Arthur, Alfred (married Alice Brownfield). There were 3 more born in Toronto. Anyone know more than we do? Liz
