Trying to find anyone who has any connections to William Henry Macleod Read born 1819. Went to Singapore in 1841 and become a famous public figure in his days in Singapore. He was involved in politics, agitating for the transfer of government of the Straits Settlements from Calcutta to the Colonial Office in London. He was also the first non-council member of the Legislative Council of Singapore. A businessman, he was responsible for many Singapore firsts - the first regatta, its first sailor's home, the first public library and the first to propose a Chinese Volunteer Rifle Corps. Would appreciate any information. |
