Trying to find Thompson

Hello from Elaine SheehannéeThompson)[email protected] - My grandfather, William Frederick Thompson is a mystery, claiming in most documents to have been born in Folkestone, Kent, possibly in the 1860s. His parents were said to be William Frederick Thompson and Sarah née Whittaker, father's job either a stationer or a publican, but there must have been a second marriage as grandfather had a stepmother. My grandfather said he had a sister, Emily. He also said he had a sister go to South Africa, but whether that was Emily is not known. He was apprenticed as a printer's devil but "ran away" to join the army and allegedly served in India for some time before emigrating to Australia (date of arrival, ship not found) where he married here. Until I can "crack" his origin a whole quarter of my ancestry is missing.
