Hi,
I found a Walter James Rookes, born abt. 1894, died April 25, 1969, who married Annie Elizabeth (Unknown), she was born about 1893 and died December 14 1968. They are buried together in Chumleigh Churchyard, Devon. This is all the information I have, as they are not as far as I know related to any of my "Rookes" family, who seem to be mainly from the Broadclyst and Silverton areas. Is he your Grandad?
I also know of a Sydney Frederick Rookes b. abt 1899, was a Royal Marine living in Knowle, Bristol with his family, when they were all killed together in an air raid on Nov. 24 1940. His wife was Dorothy Evelyn (Unknown), b. abt. 1899, and 2 sons: Gordon Frederick, b. 1926 and Norman Arthur, b. 1930. Sydney's father was a George Rookes. I found this on the Commonwealth War Graves Commision site.

Hi I am searching for George Rookes father of Walter james Born 1894 North Devon, also any brothers and sisters of Walter James, I do know my great grandad George was married three times, and had seven children throughout the three marriages I also know the last marriage was to Mira/Myra. As far as I understand most of my family comes from North Devon area. If you think you may have family connected with mine please conact.
