Trying to find Smith

I am still trying to trace my grandfather Joseph Smith. He was born about 1875 supposedly in London but can find no trace of him. He married my grandmother Rose Montague in Maidenhead Berkshire. He died in his mid thirties. I know his father was George but do not know his mothers name. He was a superintendant of a hotel in St John's Wood London when he married but was also a carrier. later in life. I also believe he was an amateur boxer with the nickname ' Holy Joe. ' I have tried everywhere to find his place of birth but have reached a dead end every time. I thought the 1901 census would be the answer but at that time my grandmother was visiting her parents so can't put the two together to make sure it is correct Joseph Smith. They had two children my mother Edith and her brother Montague. I'd welcome any suggestions. Thanks Pauline Baldwin
