Peter Foley date 24 Jan 2006 Am trying to find relatives of CHARLES KING, born in 1886 in London (SE) joined the Army served in South Africa 1902 was QSM No 11963 in 63rd Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Went to India with runaway bride Louise Alice Cartwright. They had a daughter, my mother, Dorothy Emmeline King. He was captured by the Turks at Kut-el-Ameria (in Iraq) when his CO Major General Townsend surrendered the whole garrison and lost 70% of the 1300 men handed over. Charles King died of dysentery and cruelty on 13th July 1916 on the march to Turkey. Charles's wife returned to UK with daughter and was rejected by the King family because she had run off with him. The King family lived in the New Cross Gate area of S London. Would appreciate any information as to his relatives. |
