Looking for relatives of Millicent Queenie Williams. may have been born in Wolverhampton in 1899 or Cardiff in 1900. Known as 'Queenie' she had a child at 18 out of wedlock called Margaret (Peggy) at 143 Cathays Terrace, Cathays, Cardiff in 1918. Peggy was at one time at Ethel Matthew's childrens home/orphanage. We believe Queenie married soon after the birth, possibly to Peggy's father (we do not know the name)& that there were at least two other children Dilys (1920?) and David (1922?). They tried to get Peggy back but only succeeded when she was 5 and she was not happy there and/or was 'taken' away by an elderly spinster (Emily Richens) and she spent some several years in Weston-Super-Mare and then lived in Warminster until she married a John Welch and lived in Dunmow, Essex. Peggy used the name of 'Richens' but was not officially adopted until she was 21 as the family had always wanted her back and would not give their permission for her adoption. It was said her father was an elderly artist and drank! As peggy was very artistic & died in 1980 from a drink associated problem, this is a possibility. We think the family knew where she was and tried to keep in contact. If Queenie was alive she would be 100 odd and the children in their 80's. Does this story ring any bells for anyone? Do you have a grandparent who was called Queenie, or Millicent? Neither were common names and Queenie was only favoured during the reign of Queen Victoria. Does anyone have an aunt/uncle called Dilys or David who seem to remember beng told about an older sister who was taken. Would be pleased to hear from anyone who can help. |
