Trying to find Smith

Hi everyone, I am trying to find information about my great grandfather Philip Smith. I have little to go on and Smith is not exactly an unusual name and I have had no definite proof that I have found him. Everything so far is a possible. I know he is the father of my grandmother Lily Smith born in Liverpool about 1883. Her mother was called Esther and she went on to remarry 'Jack' James Higgins. I don't know for sure that Philip and Esther married. I believe she was a domestic servant in his family home. Philip died before Lily was born, so about 1882/3, he was 21. Any information about any of them and Philips parents would be very welcome. Thank you.
