I am looking for details relating to my great-great-grandfather WILLIAM ROBERTS who was supposedly born in London around 1801-1802. He was working in London in 1822 as a footman, when he was arrested and charged with stealing a washing copper and padlock, went to trial on 3 July 1822 and was transported to New South Wales in 1823 for 7 years. He was sent out on the 'Surry'. He served his 7 years and received his ticket of freedom in 1829. He married Mary (Brian) O'Brien in 1833, in Parramatta NSW. At the time she was serving 7 years for theft of clothing. She was born Youghal (?) County of Cork. William was a member of the Maitland NSW (Aust) constabulary in 1831, but two children were born in Sydney as follows: William (1835) and Henry James (1843). I would like to hear from anyone who may know his or his family's movements in UK between his birth and his trial. It's a tall order I know! Also any movements in Australia known after 1832, especially date of death. |
