Julia Report 15 Jun 2007 20:11

I'm trying to find out more about my great great grandmother, Rose Anna/Roseanna Waterson, who was born in 1849 in Newcastle on Tyne. She was the daughter of William Waterson and his wife Sarah, whose maiden name I don't know yet. Sarah was Irish, but I can't find a marriage certificate for her and William, so they may have been married in Ireland. Roseanna had a younger brother called Arthur, who died on the 21st September 1853 in a cholera epidemic, on the same day as Sarah.
Roseanna married James Michael O'Kaine in 1864 in Newcastle. One of her children was born in Castlewellan, County Down, and the rest in England. I am trying to establish the Northern Ireland connection, as I think James was from Dundrum or somewhere nearby.
Any information will be hugely appreciated!

Still at the same brick wall with Roseanna and her parents. I tried to look up her brother Arthur's birth record, as the 1851 census states that he was born in Newcastle and was a year old. Can't find any record of his birth at all, which is a shame, as this would give me his mother's maiden name. No luck with Roseanna's birth record either, but the census says she was born in Ireland. No record of the father's birthplace.
A family legend was that Roseanna was a titled lady who ran away with a servant, possibly a groom, but I have established that she lived in the building where her father's drapery shop was, in Clayton Street, Newcastle, at least till she was four years old. As she was in the Dewsbury workhouse at 22 with four kids and a missing husband, I doubt she was the "lady" in question! Her mother might be, however, which is probably why I'm having so much trouble finding out any details.
However, I do know that Roseanna had money, which she sensibly kept out of the way of her husband, and second partner, and which she left to her eldest son. He was apparently quite well off and rode around in a carriage, until he drank himself to death and ended up in the workhouse infirmary. My two late uncles both had the original will in their possession at some point, but it's long gone now and I can't find any record of that either.

Sorry for the long-winded ramble, but I'm desperate to get this story told, and get my research kick-started again; so if anyone at all is able to help me with finding out where Roseanna, Arthur and Sarah came from, I'd be hugely grateful. After Sarah and Arthur died, I don't know what happened to William, as Roseanna is living in a pub in Clayton street, being listed as the daughter of a Margaret Lawson, with dad nowhere in sight. :-(

there are a lot of Waterson's in the Isle of Man

Julia

Julia Report 27 Feb 2012 17:37

Hello and thank you for the replies, but I have those census records already, plus I have Arthur and Sarah's death certificates. The stuff I really need and can't find is a record of Arthur's birth, Roseanna's birth, which would then give me their mother's maiden name and help me to get the research moving again.
I don't think there's an Isle of Man connection in this part of the family. It seems to be mainly in Newcastle and County Down.
Thanks again for responding.

Thank you, I've found a Griffiths Valuation entry for Roseanna on that site now, but still no birth record, so frustrating!

Julia...You could have added this request to your O'Kane one....may have made it a bit easier as I didnt have the above info.or what records you had already obtained.....also saves duplicating research...lets know which thread you want to follow....

Have we done this family before....other than 2007...?

Eringobragh1916 Report 28 Feb 2012 09:23

Julia....Am a bit puzzled as to the Griffiths Valuation entry you have found for Roseanna.....???
GV was a survey for taxation purposes (1848-1864) of every landowner and householder....Roseanna would not have come into that category ???

Julia

Julia Report 28 Feb 2012 09:56

I can only think that her father or mother might have had a bit of property, and as she was the only surviving child after her brother died, it may have gone to her. I know she had money somewhere, as she left a will, and her eldest son, who inherited the lot, was known to be pretty well off until he drank it all away! I need to do a bit more research to find out how I can get more information on Griffiths entries, because I don't really understand them yet.

Sorry about the two threads. I must have got a bit carried away at the time I wrote them, and thought it would be easier to separate the Watersons and the O'Kaines; but it does tend to get a bit messy.
Many thanks for your help so far, you've given me some useful stuff to work on.

Eringobragh1916 Report 28 Feb 2012 16:07

Julia....
Regarding the "money" maybe she inherited it from Wm. if he owned/Co owned the shop on Clayton St.....(there was also a Miss O'Connell ..Milner...listed there.ref: PO Directory 1858 27 Clayton St.)

Looking at an earlier listing 1855 he was down as living 15 East Clayton St and occup.was Travelling Linen Draper.....

Does the above correspond with what you have...???

Where in Ireland have you looked at GV...I will check it out for you....

Julia

Julia Report 28 Feb 2012 16:23

Yes, the shop was at 15 Clayton Street East, and he was there for the 1851 census.
I found a Rose Waterson listed in the GV for 1863, for Saul, County Down. Have just found out today that this is also the name of William Waterson's mum, and his dad was called Daniel.

Eringobragh1916 Report 28 Feb 2012 16:46

Julia....Have found the Watersons ...Saul Parish Downpatrick....

There were 4 living in the "Parish"... 2 in Lisboy Townland and 2 in Ballintoger...

Waterson Arthur Lisboy Saul
Waterson John Lisboy Saul
Waterson Margaret Ballintogher Saul
Waterson Rose Ballintogher Saul

If you go into the following you can look at the actual details...Rose leased her property from HW Meredyth....

askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

Just put in basic details...Surname/ Parish County....

Julia

Julia Report 28 Feb 2012 16:56

Ah, that sounds promising, and the name Arthur is probably significant, as William's son, grandson, and great grandson all had that name as well. And that area is just down the road from Castlewellan, where Roseanna's first son was born. Will my next step be looking for parish records for them, or should I do something else first?
Thanks again, this is brilliant!

I have had a look on IGI but cant see anything relevant.....

http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/down/index.html

You could try the above....(scroll down to Ros' site.... )

Thereis also a Daniel Waterson listed for Griffiths but not Saul Parish

Are you sure Arthur was the only son....?
Normal naming paterns are ...
1st male child after paternal g. father
1st female after Maternal g mother...

Where did you find Wms parents from...?

Julia

Julia Report 28 Feb 2012 20:05

My sister found a marriage record listing William's parents as Dan and Rose Waterson, and Sarah's as Henry and Mary Burns. I've sent off for what I hope is a copy of the marriage certificate, so it should get here in about a week.

Eringobragh1916 Report 29 Feb 2012 09:10

Julia...Have just been casting my eye over the thread again...!!

Check out the Susan and Cath.Burns listed on 1851 Census living with Sarah and Wm.....may well be sisters of Sarah...
They are both still listed 1861 (Caths year of birth okay but Susan's down as 1839) Census but I dont have access to look further as to who they are with...however I found this by chance ...

parents: Henry Burns, Mary Burns
spouse: James Mattigan

groom's name: James Mattigan
bride's name: Susannah Burns
marriage date: 15 Oct 1851
marriage place: Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England
groom's father's name: Patrick Mattigan
groom's mother's name: Bridget Mattigan
bride's father's name: Henry Burns
bride's mother's name: Mary Burns

The above may just be coincidence because Susan b Ireland is still listed as such 1861 Census......

Julia Report 29 Feb 2012 09:50

This gets better and better! From what I can see, Susan/Susannah's married name was Milligan, and I have now seen her in the 1871 census with her six children but no husband in the house at the time. There's another one for 1901, placing her in a care home run by the Little Sisters of the Poor, aged 71. I'll do a bit more digging to see where she is in 1861 and other years, and also will try to find out what happened to her sister Catherine. It does look as if they were Sarah's sisters, but employed by William. His brother John is also an employee/servant, but I haven't followed him up so far.
The Mattigan name could just be an transcription mistake. Ancestry website lists Arthur Waterson, Roseanna's brother, as Attes.
