Von Krogh This family had it's origin at Eynen near Ostertade in the district of Bremen. This name, Von Krogh can be spelt Kroghe, Kroge, Kroghen, Krough, Kruogh, Krug, Khrueg, Croghe, Croge; and so forth. It is a very old name in the German aristocracy and has been known since the year 1236. A former name which appears can be traced back from the year 1700 to the year 1400. It has not been possible even with the aid of the family tree, to exactly verify this statement or set forth the true primo-geniture. During the past 200 years this family's crest has been a large silver castle upon a blue back-ground, having a tower upon either side, with four star-headed poles between them. Above these is a crowned helmet surmounted by a white dog (having a gold neck band) withwide open mouth and protruding tongue. On each side of the animal are blue0white wings respectively. It is uncertain whether this is the correct crest of the family, but it was not known before 1700 and was not confined toone House, for several families of similar name were then scattered about Germany. It is said that Oberst. Ch. von Krogh of 1750 has a quite different escutcheon, namely as regards the shield and rose, and upon the crown-helmet it has two wings, which however, is not fully confirmed as this is without any inscription; besides which he simultaneously used the usual family coat-of-arms. But likewise German aristocracy, for some cogent reason, has been acknowledged by the President of the Duchy of Bremens Knighthood, when writingon the 8th June, 1890, and also by the royal heraldic office of Berlin, in a communication of the 24th June, 1875. Hence the house or family has likewise been up to the present time, numbered amongst the aristocracy with high catholic and military representatives. And it has been related to the most highly respected aristocratic families and some of it's members have received a special royal recognition of this danish rank. Communications of 28th November, 1873; August 3rd, 1888; and February 4th, 1891.* The ancestor of this family in Denmark & Norway, spells his name Berent von Krogh but it was also spelt Berent von Kroge, also Von Kreug. He was the son of Georgeor Jurgen Von Kroge, and was in 1645, colonel of one of the Glukstadt Station Companies and on King Frederick III accession to the throne nearly got into Danish-Norwegian Service. Perhaps he is not the first representative of the family here (speaking as we may assume from Denmark). In the year 1653, Gerhard or Gert Von Krogh died at Trondjeim, and who was Bernhardius' elder brother. He left by his marriage three sons and three daughters, but his family can only be dated back to the third generation. Heinrich Von Kroge, who died at this time in Lubeck, and a younger brother of Bernhardius was married to Anna Huss. One of his sons, named after him, was born at Lubeck, studied medicine and died on December 6th, 1679, and was buried at Leipzig, on the 10th of the same month in Saint Pauli Church. _____________ * Materials for forming the latter family tree, have been collected by the Lord Chancellor, C.C. Von Krogh, at Copenhagen and by Consul Adam Von Krogh, at Christiana. The contents of this information has been copied from the Geslagsregister (birth register) van die Krog-Familie in Suid Afrika dear John F Krog.
