Ag. Lab (Agricultural Labourer)

Friends of ours tell of a man who, when he traced his ancestors back to Ag. Lab on census, slammed the family history book shut never to be opened again!! Anyone who has watched the Tudor farming series Tales From The Green Valley would be happy with Ag. Lab

Nor will the brilliant Online Exhibition at 'Museum English Rural Life' disappoint. www.ruralhistory.org
**Note: To get the best out of this site, strictly double click on underlined items and single click on pictures to open. The Catalogues are not dreary lists, but actual pictures, photos, sketches and should be opened
(Spotted one Black Country name in the Catalogue of Photographs.)

Visiting the Museum
Follow their details
The collection is not a repeat of the Online Exhibition. You will be able to walk by (and sometimes under!!) wagons, industrial farm machinery, ploughs, scythes, sheep shears etc. Beside the permanent exhibition is a changing themed display. No refreshments at Museum, but on weekdays in term time, Museum visitors are welcome at The Cotton Club (Part of Reading University). If you are looking towards the Museum it is to the right, just after the side road

Servants

'Victorian Servants Hall Judges Lodging Museum'
Good quality colour photos.
www.judgeslodging.org.uk

Background book:
The Victorian Domestic Servant by Trevor May.
ISBN 0-7478-0368-4. Published by Shire Publications £3.50.
An excellent, cheap little booklet written by an expert. It's honest, but not all grim and grime. The author's humour creeps in. Cartoons, adverts, engravings, photos. Gives ideas for further research, reading and places to visit.
