Hi, I also researched the name Holehouse, as I was adopted and only recently found my birth family. My mother's maiden name was Holehouse and her first name was Emma, and her twin's name was Walter. Both born 1912. Holehouse was originally 'Holihouse' from Scotland, a branch of the Armstrong Clan, Border robbers, and very strong lads they were too by all accounts. They originated from the East Coast, near Aberdeen, and John Holihouse, (Houlihouse, many spellings) built a small castle in a valley parts of which still remain as a total ruin, and this, I believe was in the 13th Century. Liz 1 sent her troops to slaughter the Armstrong Clan as they were not allowing any one or anything in or out of the Borders, and they suffered great losses and fled South to Derbyshire and the Southern counties. We have a tartan! The Armstrong motto 'We remain unvanquished' which I very much agreed with. Gill Osborne |
