I am looking for my grandmother, Ellen Thompson of 6 and a half Sacheveral Street, Derby. She put her daughter, Edith May Thompson up for adoption in 1901 to a couple called Mary and Joseph Johnson of 35 Crompton Street, Derby. My mother Edith was engaged to Harold Bainbridge of Sitwell Street, Derby but he died of TB in 1923 aged 28. He had a lot of brothers and sisters. My mother’s adopted parents were Mary and Joseph Johnson - he was a journeyman butcher. As the Johnsons were in their forties at this time they could have possibly had other children who had already left home. My mother mentioned that she had seven step-brothers. There are two possibilities of Ellen Thompson in Derby in 1901, one who was 21 and a bootpresser , she lived at 68 King Alfred St, Derby and later married a Frank Sturgess in 1902. The second possibility was aged 17, she worked as a domestic servant and in 1905 she married an engine driver called George Larman. My mother mentioned an Aunt Clara and someone called Emmie and says she was brought up on a pub. Any help would be much appreciated. If anyone recognises anything here I’d be very glad to hear from them. Sue |
