My grandfather, Herbert David Davies was Welsh, but we don't know exactly which part of Wales he came from. He had two (I think) sisters who disapproved of his marriage to my grandmother, as 'she was too frail, and wouldn't be able to look after him'. In fact she died at 87, in 1946, having borne 18 children, twelve of whom survived, and outliving him by many years. They were married in 1876 in Woolwich, and he worked in Woolwich Arsenal as a Cabinetmaker. They lived in the same house in Brookhill Rd all their married life, I myself was born there and the house remained our family home until my mother became too ill to keep up such a large house and it was sold in 1963. My mother, Florence Daisy, was born on July 10th 1905, the youngest child and (as my grandmother was 47 when she was born) she was nicknamed 'Davies's Folly'. Sadly she died, much too young, in December 1970. Many of the 'children' lived and worked abroad. One daughter married a man called Handley, and they had a large store in Calcutta, which I believe was still there up to about 12 or 13 years ago. One of my mother's brothers was called Herbert, and was a Chief Steward on Shaw-Saville steamships. He married, but had no children. He was killed on New Year's Eve, 1942, when a drunken driver ran into the taxi he was in in Wellington, New Zealand where he was on a few days leave from convoy escort duty. Another sister, Alberta, known as 'Birdie' married Andrew Wilson, and this branch of the family are still in contact with us. However we have no knowledge of any of the others, so if anyone recognises the details of their grand parents, or great grandparents, it would be good to hear. Mary Youngs. (nee Powell) |
