Perhaps a somewhat unusual MORRIS family name request! I am searching for descendants in Ireland, if any exist, of a JOHN MORRIS, who moved there about 1634 from the village of Queen Camel in Somerset. He had first gone to Ireland to fight in 'warrs' there, was wounded, returned and procured a pension. After he had recovered, he sold the pension in order to return to the 'warrs'. And that is the last documented record I know of him. A John Morris (along with a Thomas Morris) is listed as one of a number of Commissioners for Co. Tyrone in the Poll-Money Ordinance of 1661, though I have no idea whether or not it is the same individual. My interest stems from my research into my MORRIS family in Queen Camel. Most of this can be reconstructed fairly readily back to the late 17th Century from Parish registers, and by name association, to the, so far, first known recorded individual, a JAMES MORICE, in 1509. There are many other MORRIS' recorded in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, including the JOHN MORRIS above. And the irony is that my own name is John Morris, I was born in Queen Camel, and now live in Ireland. I have seen a number of Irish MORRIS family name postings on this web site - so perhaps some of them may be connected??? I'd be very grateful for any responses or leads on this query. Thank you in anticipation. |
