Hi My name is Geraldine Cowper. My cousin, who emigrated to New Zealand in the 1950s, made a lot of money, went to Debretts and had a family tree done. Debretts claim that all people with the name Cowper are descended from the same man. In 1066 a Flemish knight called de Kuyper came over with William the Conqueror. He did so well that he was granted land on the Scottish borders. The name became bastardized to Cowper. My father was born in Ireland in 1897, to where my grandfather had moved to find a wife, a tradition amongst Scots at the time. If you are a Cowper, you have many prestigious relatives, including poets, writers and a Chancellor of England. Unfortunately my cousin never gave me a copy of the family tree! ` |
