Christine in Herts Report 22 Mar 2006 22:22

Have just found 1902-3 correspondence between my husband's grandfather: Arthur Willoughby CHAPMAN, b 1884 Black Torrington, Devon and the man who proved to be his 2nd cousin: Willoughby J CHAPMAN, b Sheepwash, Devon, some years previously and who had reached Galveston, Texas, by that time. Because they were trying to work out their relationship it is full of names and descriptions of how they fit together. The 1902 letter also gives a reference to the Great Storm of Galveston, W J Chapman having lost 20 years of savings, his home and contents, but feeling glad that he and his wife had escaped with their lives, unlike thousands of others. The 1903 letter describes the building of the new Sea Wall. I can see that there are folks on Kindred Connections, for instance, researching this line and would be interested to share info. Christine
