Unrelated members who post information on threads to help other members looking for help are the ones who almost unanimously are driven crazy by private messages. ;)

We post on lots of threads. When we get a message saying "John was married to Mary but we don't know when", we have no idea who John and Mary are, and whether we posted in the thread yesterday or last year.

That is the situation in which replies should be posted in threads -- replies to unrelated people who have volunteered to help out.

Many of us reply to those PMs asking that the info be added to the thread instead. Otherwise, the onus is on us to go searching the boards looking for what thread it might be, and then toglging back and forth between inbox and discussion board. That's a bit burdensome. Some replies liike that might appear curt. That could be because the person in question has received a half dozen similar ones already that week.

The fault, as with most problems here, lies partly with the site management, which doesn't provide obvious clear instructions for using the boards.

When it's another member who may share family, of course it's appropriate to reply personally. When the post is five years old, it's only sensible -- since the person very probably doesn't read the boards or visit GR anymore, and no notice is sent by GR when someone adds to a thread; and since back then, it wasn't even possible to add replies on the boards.

Karen, that just can't be right - half the point of this site is to make contacts! If it were unacceptable it wouldn't be made possible really. No idea what happened, but forget it and just contact away!

Hi. It may be that Karen is referring to my standard letter, one of which I sent her recently. I don't use the phrase that 'it is not acceptable to contact people directly'.

Here is the phrase I actually use:

It would be appreciated if you could put any response onto your thread rather than send the helper a private message (such as this) unless, of course, the information is of a sensitive nature. This helps all the helpers to know that you have seen the work done on your behalf.

Hope this helps - if, indeed, it is to me that Karen is referring!

If it wasn't me then it may have been someone else I guess. Cx.

Did this person say they were an administrator??

Or was it just another member advising you to reply on the thread??

As it does'nt sound right to me

I had a reply from an admninistrator saying that it was not acceptable to contact people directly I should only only contact through the thread.

why would you get your knuckles rapped for contacting someone?

Karen

Karen Report 20 Jun 2010 18:13

I know you have said that perhaps I should contact David directly but I tried that with another thread on here and got my knuckles rapped, so I better not try that.

Thanks anyway

Hi All

Yes I have the marriage cert and now know that Williams' father was James Bastable. Looking into this I believe him to have a brother, Absolom and their parents were Robert Bastable and Grace Hann.

Thankyou all for your replies and help

regards
Karen

Hi Karen,
Perhaps you could start a thread of your own. Do you have this marriage certificate:

Marriages Sep 1883
Bastable William Henry Sturminster 5a 422
PERRY Emily Sturminster 5a 422

Where is it that you are stuck??

Would love any information on Bastable family as I seem to have come to a standstill. My Grandfather was Arthur Bastable who was born in Marnhull 1890. I know his parents were Wlliam Henry Bastable and Emily Perry but I'm having trouble finding any other information.

Would love to see your tree

Many thanks

Karen
