Roger, to be perfectly honest, it really doesn't matter to any of us why Ann chooses the name she does. It just isn't any of our business.

If you look through the boards, you will see that many of the members use a 'board name' for privacy reasons. There is an option on this site to choose whichever name you want.

I am not knowledgeable on surnames - it's from a website

And for the rest of you, this poster seems to have a problem with our names - or those of us who have adopted "Board" names - he is asking me who am I, Patricia, Ann or Ann of Green Gables because it costs him time in identifying the right person!!!!

I have explained that my full name is Patricia Ann - have never used the Patricia in over seventy years and the suffix of Green Gables is to distinguish me from all the other Ann's on this site

Dear Ann and Cynthia,

Here I sit, judged convicted chastised and corrected. I will check my Thread's every time that I Log On.
Now I have searched our site and found that there are 1350 plus matches to 'WELLAND', quite a large number.
I filtered this by location to my known line and contacted the selected candidates and have now refined these to those people who are researching the WELLAND line. I also get advised of matches to other lines that have links by marriage to famale WELLAND's, this is very useful as I like to be able to show these.
So far my experience of using this site has been very good, almost everybody tries to be helpful. We all have many demands on our time so any offer of help is appreciated.
Ann, you appear to be quite knowledgeable on the origins of the surname.I noted the German connection in a Dictionary of Surnames held by SOG, unfortunatly I did not note the full publication reference.

I imagine you have entered the name Welland into the search trees box above to see how many are in trees on this site? You can always contact the tree owners of any you are interested in.

Thanks for the offer of assistance but I think that Carol and I are in a better position to help you unless you come up with a 'Mother Lode' of information!
I forget to check this part of the Genes site so my reply is rather delayed.
At the present time my research is on hold or marking time as I have years of manual records to commit to the digital type. Like a lot of other converts to the realm of digital I have had a number of problems. Good fortune has deemed that I have had no loss of basic data.
So far I have found no link to the Devon or Worcestershire lines of our name, there must be a link somewhere as the name would appear to be derived from location rather than any of the other possible origins. There are a number of derivations of the name that could be true but until I run out of WELLAND's to trace I will stick with it.

I am a keen "Welland hunter" as well, and like Carol, descend from the Worcestershire Wellands. Carol has been a great help to me in the past tracking down other ancestors. I am based in NZ which means that tracking down original registers is rather difficult(!) but am more than happy to help where I can.

Many years ago when visiting friends in Burtsmorton in Worcestershire I stumbled across the village called Welland. I was very dissapointed to find no Wellands in the Parish Register transcripts held by the SOG. Which Parish do your Wellands originate from?

I think that my line is leading me to Chiddingfold in Surrey and on into West Sussex but who knows where it wll end. The name goes back to around 1655 in my local Parish of Witley in Surrey. Looking at the place names in the census returns it looks as if there were concentrations in Surrey, Sussex and Devon a while ago.

My branch of the Wellands came from Worcestershire (traced back to the 1700s) - in fact not far from the village of Welland - to Cricklewood in the 1890's to work on the Great Western Raillway and then I lose track of them. I haven't so far found any connection with your Surrey Wellands.

Have you had any luck finding where your branch originated?

I am lucky in that my family have lived in the same area for at least four generations, I am now searching pre 1837 records in the Surrey Parishes.
What area are your WELLAND's from?

I am researching all Wellands, is anybody else following this line?
I see that there are over 1350 matches for Welland in other trees, these will take a while to work through.
I would also appreciate any pre 1837 information for BDMs and any post 1837 linkage information regarding marriages and children.
I think that I have collected all data from Census Returns and the IGI. Original Parish Register entries will be very welcome as these can be the most difficult to research.
