Looks like Winifred's mother Amy Agnes possibly died either in child birth or due to complications :-(

I was going to suggest that sporting £3.00 may very well be well worth it :-)

It was, well done Erika :-D

I note that the 1911 Census gives Winifred's place of birth as Bootle, Lancashire.

Interesting!

IF she was Pye, this family of Pyes (the only Pyes in Bootle in 1891) had two unmarried daughters of a suitable age, at home in 1891:

Miles Pye
in the 1891 England Census
Name Miles Pye
Gender Male
Age 44
Relationship Head
Birth Year 1847
Spouse
Mary M Pye
Child
Amy J Pye
Frances D Pye
Milas N Pye
Evelyne N Pye
Birth Place Liverpool
Civil parish Bootle
Residence Place Bootle, Bootle, Lancashire, England
Registration District West Derby
Sub registration district Walton
ED, Institution or Vessel 22
Neighbors
Piece 2974
Folio 8
Household Members (Name) Age Relationship
Miles Pye 44 Head
Mary M Pye 30 Wife
Amy J Pye 22 Daughter <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< died 1899
Frances D Pye 13 Daughter <<<<<<<<<<<<<< can't see definitely after 1901
Milas N Pye 4 Son
Evelyne N Pye 1 Daughter
Mary Ellen Guy 32 Cousin

There were also two older daughters -

Ann/Annie Jane 1870 - possibly died unmarried in 1923 as Jane Ann.
Eva Annie, 1871, married in Apr-Jun qr 1893 (any significance ??) to Hugh William Stevens.

Potentially very useful.......

I've done some checking and can see no record of Winifred Pye other than her birth.

The coverage of the Inquest of the bodies of Mrs Sainsbury and Mrs Buckeridge is quite interesting with evidence by Mrs Sainsbury's sister, Miss Eliza Howell.

The Coroner asks Miss Howell
"Do I understand that Mrs Buckeridge was the adopted daughter of Mrs Sainsbury"
Miss Howell answers "Yes"
"Do you remember her maiden name?
Miss Howell answers "It would be in some papers at the cottage where my sister lived. Her maiden name began with a 'P'. That is all I can remember."
"She was 28 years old when"
Miss Howell answers
"May 10th last"

So I'm wondering whether she could have been Winifred Pye :-)

Perhaps getting a digital copy of Winifred Pye's birth certificate to see whether her date of birth was 10 May 1893 the same as Winifred Buckeridge :-)

I wonder if Anna realises she needs to return - I have sent a pm.

You could try dna but you really need a relevant parent or grandparent to do the test.
Or one of their siblings.

Then working through the matches you may find a group that make no sense to what you know.

There is no guarantee that this will work.

ErikaH Report 18 May 2026 11:21

Tragic.............

However, as adoption was not a formal process until the 1920's, the chances of identifying Winifred's birth mother must be close to zero. Sorry, but one has to be realistic.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 May 2026 22:49

What a very sad story! (Sorry, no help with Winifred's parentage)

Winifred married George Vincent Buckeridge in Hereford in 1915.

In 1921, Winifred and daughter Hilda Mary are in Kington, Hereford, with Winifred's adoptive mother Wilhelmina - without George.

On December 29, 1922, George shot and killed Wilhelmina, and also shot Winifred who died the following day.
He was sentenced to be hanged - supposed to be carried out in 1923.
However, he was reprieved, and in 1939 George was a patient in Broadmoor Asylum.

He died in 1954.

A long and detailed account of the joint funeral of Winifred and Wilhelmina has been added to Winifred's entry on Findagrave:

Winifred Sainbury Buckeridge
Birth
1895
Death
30 Dec 1922 (aged 26–27)
Pembridge, Herefordshire Unitary Authority, Herefordshire, England
Burial
St Giles Churchyard
Mansell Gamage, Herefordshire Unitary Authority, Herefordshire, England

In 1939, the daughter Hilda Mary is with her aunt Mary Ann Buckeridge.

I was typing as you were posting AG.

Arthur Sainsbury married Wilhelmina Powell in 1890

ArgyllGran

Only the two I posted above were illegitimate.

Registration district for Bootle was West Derby

On the off chance that her given name at birth was Winifred, find all births for the name in the right district in AMJ1893 on freebmd……then look for each of them on the GRO index to find out if any of them were illegitimate

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 May 2026 22:28

*IF * her name was Winifred when her birth was registered, these MIGHT be possibilities:

DAVIES, WINIFRED -
GRO Reference: 1893 J Quarter in WEST DERBY Volume 08B Page 424

PYE, WINIFRED -
GRO Reference: 1893 J Quarter in WEST DERBY Volume 08B Page 466

But I don't think you could ever prove it.

Do you know her exact DoB?

Hello, I am looking for any information and perhaps you can please help - I am searching for the mother of my adopted great grandmother - Winifred, born 1893 Bootle - adopted at 6 weeks old to Arthur Sainsbury. Can anyone help or maybe there is a baby that you know in your tree that matches this? Long shot I agree. I have just joined this site and I am not sure if or how I can find this out. Thank you so much, Anna.
