10 Oct 1921 Hartlepool Northern Dail Mail
APPLICATION FOR EJECTMENT This morning application was made to the West Hartlepool magistrates for an ejectment order against Harriet Evans, who occupies part of no.25 Ladysmith Street. The ground of the application was non payment of rent - the woman said it was not her fault. She could not pay her rent and let her children go about in their bare feet. She was only receiving £1 a week from the Parish. The Chairman (Mr Owen) said the case would be adjourned for a month. If no payment were made the order would issue.

5 Jun1919 North Star (Darlington) Durham
When a young West Hartlepool wife named Harriet Evans summoned her husband, Samuel Evans yesterday for desertion, she stated that her husband thrashed her and turned her out.
When she returned for her clothes he observed "Oh, summer has come!" to which she retorted "Yes, and winter too!" Laughter.
The bench made an order for him to pay 25s per week maintainance.

Had a look at birth records. Found 10 Evans with MMN as Scrimshaw and found 4
Moores with MMN as Scrimshaw. A few names were on both lists.

In 1921, she says she’s married, but there’s no husband at the address.
As she was 'married' all births would be recorded as being children of her husband, but that doesn't mean he was the father
ADDED
EASY to find info on freebmd
Births Dec 1932 (>99%) Evans Terence Scrimshaw Hartlepool 10a 154 Moore Terence Scrimshaw Hartlepool 10a 154
A similar scenario for Margaret and Norman.....................didn't you check the birth registrations??

Harriet EVANS is living with Robert MOORE in 1939 as is Watson, and his brother Sydney….both listed as MOORE
There is NO record of her marrying Moore, so they must simply have co-habited
The 1939 register records a change of name for the woman, but with no date info

As I hope you’ve found, the birth was registered as EVANS. As were all 10 of the other children
I hope you’ve verified Watson’s second forename……………….and Sidney’s

I have been asked by a distant relative to try to search for history of Harriet Scrimshaw family. I found she married a Samuel Evans in 1915 in Hartlepool but he seems to think that her husband was Robert Moore. Didn't find a second marriage for her. One of her children was Watson Evans ( "Watty") Moore b .1925 d.1967 and was a long serving player for Hartlepool United F.C.
Any help greatly appreciated. Terry L.
