I have come into possession of a photo of a beautiful little girl. It was amongst family possessions when the last generation died. It shows her name-M.G.J, her date of birth in 1930 and her address . Whereas this information doesn't tell me who she was the name immediately rings a bell as I know of two other girls with the same surname and the same common Christian name born into the family roughly around this time. They came from the same community, from which people rarely moved then - there was a lot of work there. The 1939 Register has a census entry for her name ( but born two days later) some 80 miles away. Her name is amended showing a new Christian name and surname . Alongside the change of name it gives a date " 26/7/47" and "EBA (M)". The original entry shows another child immediately after her with the same common Christian name- this makes 3. I can't shake the feeling that this child is from our family- not least because someone cared enough to keep a photo of her. Am I right in thinking the endorsement on the register means she has been adopted? With many thanks to you

EBA is the code for Hampshire, where the change was registered.
I imagine M indicates a particular Hampshire location, but I don't know which.

It doesn't necessarily mean she was adopted.

If you can give us the name(s) and address given on the 1939 Register (which isn't a census) , we can have a look at the image.

The only places where any info about a child’s adoption is officially recorded are on an original birth certificate, and on a census as the info required for those is different, other than the adoption file, of course. It certainly would not be on the 1939 register.

The name Roberts was quite simply that of the man she MARRIED.

Look at freebmd and find the entry in 1949 in Portsmouth

The (M) would refer to marriage one would imagine :-S :-S

Have you done the obvious thing and looked for her birth?

What was the maiden name of William I’s wife? When did they marry?

Her birth is on freebmd, as are those of her siblings

However, one stands out as a possibility - in 1956

Margaret Jones is hardly uncommon in Wales!

You said that Margaret Gwyneth was born two days before MGJ's DOB - therefore 29 June 1930.
That would fit with the birth posted above by ErikaH.

(Assuming that the DOB stated in 1939 was correct - they often aren't.)

Also implied that Wrexham is approx 80 miles away from - where? Margaret Gwyneth's expected address, or MGJ's address on the photo?


As the photo was among family papers, MGJ or her parents must at least have been known to a member of your family, even if not related.

Parents married 1921 in Brecknock RD - Mary Gwen's surname Evans, not Roberts.

Margaret G actually registered as Gwynneth M in Brecknock 1929.


There are lots of Jones/Roberts marriages, so without the birth cert for Margaret Gwynneth, it's impossible to pinpoint her parents.

Why don't you get a copy of the birth cert for her parents' names? That would make the most sense.....................................

Ancestry suggests this marriage..............obviously needs to be checked!!
