Looks like one of those names where people write what they hear rather than checking the spelling.

85 years ago today on the 23rd November 1940 a stray anti aircraft shell penetrated the roof of the Mansfield House Hotel which was located on the corner of Milvil Road and Newton Place in Lee. At the time it was being used as accommodation for Wrens and tragically 10 were killed. The hotel building was until recently the Glen Heathers Nursing Home and there is a remembrance plaque on the front wall, see photo below.
The Wrens killed were
Rosa Armstrong (Age 36 years old)
Joyce Bennett (Age 19 years old)
Mona Black (Age 23 years old)
Winnie Blackett (Age 19 years old)
Vera Cowle or Cowell (Age 18 years old)
Nellie Gregory (Age 32 years old
Beryl Northfield (Age 19 years old)
Hilda Pearson (Age 26 years old)
Norah Reynolds (Age 23 years old)
Dorothy Wardell (Age 22 years old)
Eight of the Wrens were buried in Haslar Cemetery but two were buried close to their home, Joyce Bennett at Dorking Cemetery and Winnie Blackett at Rotherham (Moorgate) Cemetery.
Unfortunately there appears to be some confusion over the name of one of the Wrens, Vera Cowle / Cowell. The church service sheet and newspaper reports of the time say Cowell and other sources such as the CWGC, memorial plaque and grave stone say Cowle.
