Many thanks for that, ErikaH.
It's a pity the actual death record isn't available.
However, I can now consider this thread answered.

Jane's obituary states that Samuel died at Grafton on January 4th 1889............date as per the Ancestry tree.
The newspaper report of daughter Esther's marriage in Feb 1891 states that it took place at her MOTHER's home in South Fairmont, giving further weight to the info about her father's death
|
|
It's actually just one obituary - Jane's.
What appears to be Samuel's is just another link to Jane's.
|
|
You're welcome.
Just adding her as they both have an obituary in the same newspaper. It's a shame that there is so little info on Samuel's transcription ;-)

Yes, Christina. That's him. Thanks for looking.
But I already have Jane's death details, thanks. It's Samuel's death that I can't find.

I don't have the right subscription to view newspapers but wondered if this is him?

Thanks for looking, Names and Erikah.
I'll update if I hear from the Ancestry tree owner.

So.......progress of a sort ;-) ;-)

I've just looked yet again at the 1886 travel record, and realise I've misread it, in spite of studying it closely several times!
Only three Montgomerys sailed - Samuel junior, Esther, and Clara. Samuel is line 39, not 38.
So that's the whole family accounted for, as far as emigration is concerned.
|
|
I think the abbreviation on the image is Sam................occupation certainly matches previous records

I hadn't looked at any trees until now.
I see now that Samuel 1828 is in 85 trees on Ancestry, many of which claim that 1889 date of death, but none give any documentary proof, as far as I can see, though I haven't checked them all.
I can't find that death on Ancestry or FS.
One tree offers the 1851 census as proof of 1889 death ?! Typical rubbish tree "facts".
I did see the 1880 census a few days ago while researching the family.
The man born in Massachusetts had a wife named Jane - but they're obviously not the right couple.
However - One tree (Montgomery Family Tree) says : "Samuel Montgomery and Wife Jane Holtom and Daughter Sarah Montgomery Immigrated from Liverpool, England 31 Aug 1887 to Philadelphia, PA arriving 14 Sep 1887 traveling on the Lord Gough"
That seems to be correct, as I've now found:
S Ann Montgomery in the Pennsylvania, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Crew Lists, 1798-1962 Name S Ann Montgomery Gender Female Arrival Age 27 Birth Date abt 1860 Birth Place England Last Residence England Departure Place Liverpool, England Arrival Date 14 Sep 1887 Arrival Place Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Ship Lord Gough
Travelling with Samuel (abbreviation on image looks like Saud) 59 and Jane 54. (She was really 56).
I'll ask that tree owner about the supposed 1889 death.
However, now I don't know who the invisible person on line 39 of the 1886 travel record is.

|
Have you tried contacting the owner of this tree on Ancestry?
Samuel Montgomery Birth 23 APR 1828 • Wappenham, Northamptonshire, England
Death 4 JAN 1889 • Fairmont, Fillmore, Nebraska, USA
Not sure how reliable her research is, though. She has attached an 1880 US census record for a man born in Massachusetts :-S :-S :-S :-S

I wondered if the group had to be headed by an adult male, as Samuel is listed first, before his mother (?) and sisters.
That's assuming it's the son who emigrated, and not the father.
|
|
I did wonder if he had lied. First thought that they needed ad adult with them but then Esther was so much older.
If only people would write clearly and not mark entries ;-) :-D :-D :-D
|
|
Samuel, the son, was born 1/9/1867, so yes, he would have been 18, almost 19, on the date of arrival in NY.
The age of the Samuel on the emigration record is very unclear . It may or may not have a 1 in it, and before that there's a black mark which might (with some imagination) be 2.
If it does say 21, perhaps he lied.
Clara was born 27/12/1869, so would have been 16, as the image appears to show. Esther was apparently baptised twice (28/3/1855 and 5/8/1855), therefore presumably 31 when she emigrated.

|
I’ve not gone on the hunt but reading through it.
The Samuel who sailed with Clara & Esther couldn’t be 21 he was only 2 years older than Clara so would have been 18.

I'll be grateful if anyone can find the death of this man, in either UK or US.
Samuel Montgomery, born 23/4/1828 in Wappenham, Northants.
Baptised 26/5/1828 in Towcester, Northants. Parents James and Sarah.
1841: in Wappenham with parents and siblings. 1851: Servant to George Linnell (a farmer of 256 acres) in Leckhampstead.
24/11/1851 - married Jane Holtom in Sibford, Oxfordshire.
1861: a railway labourer, with wife Jane, children (Esther, Herbert, and Sarah Ann) , brother Joshua, and brother-in-law Henry Holtom, in Duddeston-cum-Nechells, Aston, Birmingham.
1871: "Manager of coal, lime, & brick wharf" - in Lichfield Road, Gravelly Hill, Erdington, with wife, children (Herbert, Sarah Ann, Samuel, Alice, Clara Jane), and brother-in-law Richard Holtom.
Daughter Alice died in 1880.
1881: Samuel Montgomery in the 1881 England Census Name Samuel Montgomery Age 52 Estimated Birth Year abt 1829 Relationship to Head Head Spouse Jane Montgomery Gender Male Where born Wappenham, Northamptonshire, England Civil parish Aston County/Island Warwickshire Country England Street Address 43 Potters Hill Marital Status Married Occupation Coal Dealer Registration District Aston Sub registration district Aston Manor ED, institution, or vessel 38 Neighbors Piece 3044 Folio 7 Page number 8 Household Members (Name) Age Relationship Samuel Montgomery 52 Head - Coal dealer Jane Montgomery 50 Wife Herbert Montgomery 23 Son Samuel Montgomery 13 Son Clara Montgomery 11 Daughter Alice Holton 21 Niece
In September 1886, four members of the family emigrated to Nebraska, via New York, on the "Egyptian Monarch". They're on lines 38-41 of the record below. Line 38 has Samuel Montgomery, fitter, age unreadable (but just MAYBE 21???), so I'm assuming that's the son, as the father probably wouldn't be described as a fitter (though he's only called a labourer on son Herbert's marriage cert in 1882).
Line 39 is invisible, but I assume that's the mother Jane, as she's in Nebraska by 1900 census. Line 40 is Esther, 30. Line 41 is Clara, 16.
Samuel Montgomery in the New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957 Name Samuel Montgomery Gender Male Ethnicity/ Nationality English Place of Origin England Departure Port London, England Destination New York Arrival Date 8 Sep 1886 Arrival Port New York, New York, USA Ship Name Egyptian Monarch
Son Herbert did not emigrate. In 1882 he married Eliza Lees, and in 1891 they are in Erdington. Marriage record doesn't say if Samuel is deceased or not.
1890: most of the US Census was destroyed by fire, including all of Nebraska.
1891: daughter Esther married John Howell in Nebraska. The record doesn't say if Samuel is deceased or not. 1896: son Samuel married Tamer Nelson in Kansas, but their fathers are not named on the marriage record. 1897: daughter Clara married George Uebel in Nebraska. No fathers' names on the record.
1900 Census: Jane (listed as widowed) is in Nebraska with married daughter Esther Howell and family , and her other daughter Sarah Montgomery. No sign of Samuel.
1910: daughter Sarah is with "husband" Charles Chamberlain in Harlan, Nebraska, but I can't find a marriage record. Charles's first wife Josephine/Josie had died in 1900. Census says Sarah emigrated 1888, though I can't find a record.
I have all the other history for Jane and the family in Nebraska, and for Herbert in UK, so please don't spend time on them.
I don't see Samuel 1828 in either UK or USA after 1881, and will be grateful if anyone else can find his death or any other record of him after 1881. Presumably 1882-1900, if Jane is correctly listed as widowed in 1900.
Thanks for looking.
