TIP:

When accessing censuses, if you see what you think is incorrect spelling, look at the original to make sure that it isn’t simply a mistranscription.

Also, bear in mind that many people in those days could not spell, and the enumerator would write down what he ‘heard’, so look for all possible variants.

Family history groups in the relevant area(s) may have websites and the chance to contact them to ask for assistance.

But….the few helpers who remain on here are always willing to give of their time etc, so don’t be shy about asking

Following on from what Kathleen said, it may seem strange to join a Family History Society which is local to where you live but has no connection to where you are researching. Membership gives you access to the sites they have subscribed to and to all the advice sessions they run.
If you have a local Church of the Latterday Saints (Mormons) it would be worth checking to see if they have a research room, there may not be any help ( there wasn’t at mine) but you would have access to their computers.

If you are in the UK look out for special events put on by the local Family History Societies or bigger companies like the Family History Shows. They are a touch local but have advice sessions.

Definitely no external groups connected with GR

The people who help on here are very few in number these days - the site used to be a hive of activity, but sadly, that is no longer the case

You’ve been given info about some free sites and also how to access others, but don’t forget to google…………….

One site which I can’t see in the list is the GRO site, which is free and gives MMN on pre-1911 births. It has births and deaths, but not marriages.

nameslessone Report 30 Aug 2025 09:49

Brain has woken up -
the missing one is www.freecen.org.uk - not all census are covered
www.freereg.org.uk - parish registers , not all are covered
www.freebmd.org.uk - births marriages & deaths from late 1837 not yet to the present day but work is ongoing all the time.

Also look at Search/search all members trees to see if any member has your family in their trees. You can then click on the name and send a pm. Genes will notify them of the pm as long as their contact details are up to date. I can see there are a lot of other peple on there with the same names as you, so well work checking it out. Just a note, you shouldn't have anyone living in your tree without their permission.

If you check with your local library many have a Family History group that meet in the local library or a hall nearby where there would be lots of people who would be willing to help.

Members on Genes are always willing to look up things if you give plenty of detail of what you are looking for.

Findmypast (which I use) and Ancestry usually have a free 14 day trial period which is worth trying but remember to cancel before the 14 days is up or they will charge you for the year.

Good luck.

Only using Genes - that explains a lot. Genes is definitely not the best place for research. Not many on here use it for research.

Free sites: www.freebmd.org.uk, www.freereg.org,uk ( there’s another one but mind has gone blank).
Family Search.

I don’t know where you are but most British library services have free access to Ancestry - West Yorkshire records on Ancestry are very good. Ancestry also have the Fsmily search and find a grave links.
The newspaper article probably came from the British Newspaper Archives - you can do a free search but results are often incomprehensible.

Certificates are bought from the GRO, depending on dates they can be cheaper as downloads. Wills ( after 1856) can be bought from the Gov. Probate Office

Wow and ho my giddy aunt, thankyou all, please accept my greatful thanks.

Please post me a set of link you all use, I see there are some, but I'm struggling with just Genes reunited and you are all so much more experienced then me.

Are there any social groups your attached to or groups that meet up?

Again thankyou all.

Charles was baptised 1st April 1838, father John, mother Elizabeth

It doesn’t appear that his birth was registered, so you will have to find another way of determining MMN, should you wish to.

Rebecca’s death is easily found on freebmd….1880, aged 40

No suggestion on freebmd that her surname at marriage was anything other than COOK, and the actual marriage certificate (on FMP) backs this up.

They married in Aughton, where he was baptised

Keith Report 29 Aug 2025 13:34

Hi all,

I'm looking to find full info on Charles Knoppy b.m.death (incorrect spelling of surname, should be Knappy) born 1837-8 Howden, Laytham.
In 1851 census Charles Knappy 13 1838 servant, I believe this is the correct Charles as all the family in 1841 John, Elizabeth Knappy and all the children (Knoppy in 1841) are spelt Knappy in 1851.
Then 1861 Charles Knappy 24 b.1837 is back with mum & dad, but he marries in 1861 so I think he's there for the wedding to Rebecca Cook or Thorpe which took place in Howden
In 1871 he's a Policeman with Rebecca in Wakefield & in 1881 Policman in Headingley (a Widower).

I cannot reconcile Charles death year, which Rebecca, Cook or Thorpe or her death.

If anyone can help please.

Regards

Keith K
