Lizzie STONER in 1921 Greenwich - who is she

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Alice COOKMAN 2Q1883 Greenwich married William SHRIMPTON in 2Q1909. William probably died 1916 and Alice married James H STONER (Stones on FreeBMD) 3Q1925.

1921 census shows James 1879 (actually 1881) and Alice 1881 (actually 1883) plus Lizzie daughter born 1913 and James Henry born 1920.
James 1920 b/c confirms parents as James & Alice with the same 33 Speedwell St address.
But who is Lizzie? My only thought at the moment is that she is Elizabeth Mary STONER birth 4Q1914, born to another James Henry STONER 1874 part of the clan, and Fanny HARRIS(S) with whom she appears in 1921. Maybe with 8 children, one was staying elsewhere and was listed twice?

Have you looked at the IMAGE of the census?

Lizzie Stoner is said to be 7 years 11 months old at 1921 Census (21 June).
If correct, she therefore would have been born July 1913.
As James Henry filled in the form, one would hope he would know when his daughter was born. 7 years 11 months seems a very specific age to give if he wasn't sure.
Also, he wouldn't write "daughter" if she wasn't his daughter.

Elizabeth Mary was born 26 August 1914, according to her baptism record - and also the 1939 Register.

Whilst I'm looking for clues -

Ethel May Shrimpton may be a patient in Stoke Gifford near Bristol in 1921

William with A Company, 20th London Defence Battalion, Wimbledon Common

Violet is a Servant in Blackheath. Of that address she was charged with stealing from the kitchen - admitted she did as was "hard up'. She was an orphan who had been placed in the situation from the Greenwich Guardians Homes at Sidcup. she was placed on probation for 12 months.

Albert is in that Home in Sidcup, and noted that Father is dead

If you check the image, the man has put ages in years…plus months……..for example, for Lizzie, he has written 7 years November, for the son he has put 1 year June. I suggest that those refer to the birth months, so Lizzie is not 7 years 11 months as transcribed by Ancestry

You need to follow-through on her……..

Thank you all for the information and comments.

Apologies. 1900. I misread my transcript of the Wiliiam Shrimpton/Alice marriage year. (Maybe it was those dots in the centre of italic '0' - but at least I didn't write 1999.)

My interest is the Stoner side and, yes, I have looked at the images of the Stoner censuses.

James was born in June 1920 so I read Lizzie 7yrs Nov in 1921 as aged 7 and born in November rather than 7yrs 11 months. I didn't find her when looking through the St Paul Deptford baptismal register, Nov '13 to April '14.

Alice continued to have Shrimpton children until 1916 which may suggest one of Lizzie's parents was James Henry rather than Alice.

Thanks for Elizabeth Mary's baptism. I have her marriage.

.. but still lack any other trace of Lizzie.

It does seem feasible that Lizzie was a daughter of John Henry from a previous relationship -
but there's no illegitimate birth of a Lizzie of any surname, registered in Greenwich RD in 1913-14.

There's one Elizabeth (Elizabeth Emily Bennett 1914) but she died in infancy.

There was also an Elizabeth Crook in 1912, but she too died in infancy.

What was James Henry Stoner’s marital status when he married in 1925?

If, as you say., Alice’s first husband died in 1916, why did they wait until 1925………especially as they had a child together in 1920?

Was he married to someone else?

Alan

Alan Report 17 Jun 2025 22:14

I've seen the one b/c for the 1920 birth but not the eventual m/c and do not know the reason for the delay. They also had children in 1921 1923 1924 before getting married. I have no other spare marriages for him.
