Hi to everyone and thank you all very much for your time and kindness in replying to my post.
Some of you may have gathered that I am indeed a complete novice and have never undertook anything like this previously so please forgive me for my lack of knowledge of how to go about researching this on my own but my aim is to establish if I have any potential living relatives today as I know the family is rooted in the Portsmouth Hampshire area.
I have only just started on this journey by beginning to build my family tree and already I'm feeling blown away by what I an discovering, I had until recently not known who my great grandparents were or that my grandfather had a brother and several sisters, this is all news to me.
I'm sure that in the fullness of time there will be more to discover once I start to research all of the other people in my family tree more fully and individually but, once again please accept my heartfelt thanks for your time and kindness in replying to me.
Just to clarify for one member my great grandfather was indeed Thomas James Hanrahan born 1859 in Barnes Surrey, he resided in Jubilee Road Portsmouth and was a Foreman of Stores, Royal Navy Ordnance Department, he died in 1912.
Kindest regards.
Brian Hanrahan

The start of lovely hunting on your part.
Investigate several sources: Check out search/search all members trees as I suggested yesterday.
Www.freebmd.co.uk is a useful source which can then lead you into the GRO.
Library services in the UK usually have free access to Ancestry and sometimes Find My Past, which can save you on subs.
Local archives, sometimes found in local main libraries.
The Hampshire family history society is actually called the Hampshire Genealogy society. I think the Portsmouth section of this may have moved to Gosport,
Added: the National Archives at Kew hold some records of HM Dockyard workers.
