Hi Have reached a point where I am struggling and wondered if you might assist me please? I have progressed as far as Naphtali Chalk born 16/1/1888 in Angmering, Sussex. His father was William Chalk and Mother Dinah Chalk (maiden name Boniface). I have their marriage certificate 1869 Chichester, Sussex (certificate viewable on Ancestry) which gives Williams father as George Chalk a Labourer. The censuses from 1871 - 1911 where I have found William give his place of birth as follows: 1871 Margin Veal? Wiltshire 1881 Downton, Wiltshire 1891 Redlinch, Wiltshire 1901 Angmering, Sussex 1911 Downton, Wiltshire I believe he died in 1913. Pre 1869 marriage I havent determind the correct censuses or the birth record as I can not see William with a a father George. PLEASE HELP!! :-S

As William had to complete the 1911 census himself then I would go with that.
It wasn’t compulsory to register births for a while after the registrations began and you haven’t indicated when you think William was born.
William’s mother may not have been married and he might have invented a fathers name.
Added: my post crossed with Marion’s. I wonder if it is worth getting the William Chalk birth certificate 1852 in South Stoneham, Hants. The parents might have moved to Hampshire immediately after the birth and before they could register ( on freebmd)

Thank you Marian All of the censuses 1871 - 1911 gave his birth year as 1847 but very happy with your findings of George, the marriage of George and Elizabeth and the baptism in Redlynch :-D

If 1847 is nearer the right date then there are several other possibilities all on freebmd.

If the birth was registered, it will be on the GRO site where MMN is given, if the birth was legitmate
It is FREE to use, and much more useful than freebmd for pre-1911 births

I would have thought that the census nearest to his birth would be more likely to have him at the right age ie the 1861 when he is 9 (not always true)

North Charford - a hamlet in Hants but close to the Wilts border - is next to Morgan's Vale and Downton, a few miles from Fordingbridge where Elizabeth is said to be born on the 1861 census. The 1871 says she was born in ? Hale - close to Charford
