Florence
I believe you may have an Ancestry account?

Transcribed East Sussex records for Battle baptisms can be viewed there and you can move forward or back through the pages......

Thomas and Charlotte married in Crowhurst in Jan 1808.................where the first child Frances was baptised, as per my earlier post

Ancestry ...East Sussex records show a Battle marriage on 13 August 1793 for a Stephen Gower marrying Jemima Cruttenden ( both of that parish )

Baptism transcribed records show her possible baptism 9 November 1774 in Battle as CRITTENDEN, dau. of William and Mary.

They feature on submitted family trees too.

Might this be the 1841 census Jemima ?

Greyghost, ty. It didn't occur to me that she married a Gower. I didn't see that it said she was a widow!

Rounding the ages changes things a lot.

I'm working on the children of the firstborn William b1812.(7 chuldren)

William's daughter Jane Gower b 1838 had 11 children!!! So that will, keep me busy for awhile.

Ty for the info, always appreciated

In 1841 they would have given their ages which for anyone over the age of 15 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 ie age 19 would show as 15 so born 1826-1822

Showing on 1841 as 65 could have been aged 65-69 and therefore born between 1776 and 1772 and as 55 could have been 55-59 so born between 1786 and 1782

Sometimes actual ages appear to be recorded.

Ah names so there were 2 more, thought so ty. Francis & William.

One other curiosity about the parents is that on 1841 census, it shows a lady called Jemima Gower also born 1776 same as Thomas. It crossed my mind if they were twins, brother & sister. She never married and died in 1845.

Ty folks for your kind help

Unless you can find baptisms of any other children on FamilySearch, for instance, or can deduce anything from location of any marriages giving father's name, there's no way to find out.

Any children born before George would have left home and be living independently by 1841.

ErikaH Report 15 Aug 2023 19:14

There is a William on 1851 born c1812 in Battle………married to Lydia by 1841.

Marriage actually pre-1837, so no father’s name info will be available, unfortunately

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 15 Aug 2023 18:57

There is only ONE baptism on FMP in Sussex for a Gower child with parents Thomas and Charlotte

That was 20 March 1808 in CROWHURST………….first name Frances

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 15 Aug 2023 18:54

1841 census ages were supposed to be ‘rounded’ for over-15’s

Look for offspring of the marriage living elsewhere………..

ONLY 1911 census has info about numbers of children born in the marriage and living/dead

Ty names. my FMP expired but hoping to renew it next month.

nameslessone

nameslessone Report 15 Aug 2023 17:42

I think FMP now has Sussex records. I don’t have it myself.

Added: According to Genuki the Sussex FHS have the baptismal index. Not sure if they are willing to do a search ( at a cost?).
More: I googled and got a Family search tree which gives 6 children Frances, William, George, John, Charlotte & Harriet.

Florence61 Report 15 Aug 2023 17:18

I am trying to see if there were any other children born to the marriage of

Thomas Gower b 1776 Hallington, Sussex
M 1808
Charlotte Cheale b 1786

on the 1841 census
George Gower b 1816
John Gower b 1821
Charlotte Gower b 1823
Harriett Gower b 1827

It just seems strange that if they married in 1808, their first child wasnt born until 1816? Unless, their firstborn children died in infancy.

This census is not the one where it shows number of living and number that died.

Any suggestions where else it I can find out?

The family are mostly from the battle area of Sussex
