What do you hope to learn from a birth cert - if one exists?

I tried looking on Scotland's People.

If you pick 'minors' in the county option on the births index, it gives you options like consular returns, foreign register etc, but nothing came up I'm afraid.

It doesn't look as if that information is available online, though maybe viewable on microfilm in New York:

They may have registered the birth with the British Embassy.

You could try googling

When did the US start issuing birth certs?

If they were UK nationals, the regulations may have been different from those for US citizens

Hi I have James on the 1891 Scotland census with his parents in Orkney, his father had a 5 year contract with HBC, that's why he was born in New York, can anybody please tell me if you can apply for a birth certificate in USA.

Thank You
Sandra
