Can one assume you have already searched through the records on Scotland’s People ?

I'm still struggling to find any info for Bernard McGinnes / Mary Johnston. (lived in Greenock) he was possibly a seaman. they are both on the birth cert. of son Joseph.
I would appreciate any help thank you.
