Caris,

Laura isnt Florence she is another woman altogether,

Florence Emma Blake did not marry Douglas Wyatt ,,,they just had a relationship which ended as many do with a child,,,,Douglas jnr was the result.......in 1939 he was for reasons placed with the Carpenters and later into a childrens home,,,,Florence by this time could have been anywhere,or married at a much later date,,,,,,,,she possibly even never married,?

Douglas birth certificate 1932 probally shows Florence Emma Wyatt ---formally Blake but its not proof the parents were married,

Its got to be established now ,where Florence came from and how old she may have been in 1932,,,,,

Just an after thought,,,,,have you aproached Barnados to see if any information could be released.?

Was George and Lizzie Carpenter related to Florence,,,,,,,Lizzie Head married George Carpenter .

There is NO marriage of Florence E Standing to Douglas Wyatt.

The 1933 marriage is for Laura E Standing - it's been posted more than once on this thread.

Just read this, little confusing. So what would this mean, is it possible Florence isn't her real name same as lying of her marriage? What could I search more on now? Is her name even Florence? Iv come across a Laura wyatt in searches.

1933 - that's the marriage I posted on 10 March at 09:55:

Marriages Mar 1933 (>99%)
Standing Laura E Wyatt Brighton 2b 358
Wyatt Douglas J Standing Brighton 2b 358

In 1939 they're together in Petersfield, as already posted.

But doesn't help with Florence Blake, unfortunately.
She clearly predates Laura in Douglas's affections.

An update on the bigamous marriage.

A lawful wife and a bigamous wife- said to be 'the Cuckoo in the Nest' - slept together in one room while the husband slept in another, the Judge was told at Sussex Assizes yesterday.
Asked whether the two women got on well together, counsel answered "They survived the night."
Douglas John Wyatt, head herdsman of Lindfield, Sussex was sentenced to nine months imprisonment for bigamously marrying Freda Grace Elphick.
It was stated that the lawful marriage took place in 1933 and that in Nov 1945, Wyatt's wife left him, as she was fed up with farm work.
Wyatt tried to trace her then got the idea of going through a bigamous marriage to enable him to find his proper wife. Through a matrimonial agency, he met Miss Elphick whom he married in Dec 1945 telling her he was a widower.
After one night he left her. Hearing of the bigamous marriage, the lawful wife wrote to Wyatt's mother, disclosing her address.
Wyatt bought this letter for £1, went to see his lawful wife, and they stayed together.
Wyatt introduced the two women to each other, and the lawful wife then left Wyatt, who reassured Miss Elphick that they were legally married.
The lawful wife sent Wyatt some cigarettes, and Wyatt again asked her to return.
THE JUDGE: WAS IT THE CIGARETTES? Mr A Harmsworth (prosecuting) : It might have been. It was a packet of 20
Later Miss Elphick decided to leave and Wyatt was reconciled to his wife, with whom he became on the best of terms.

No idea if this is your Douglas John but it seems to fit with the newspsper snippit posted by Kay???? Lindfield is about a mile from Haywards Heath I think.

BIGAMY CHARGE: STRANGE STORY A strange story was told to the Brighton Bench when Douglas J Wyatt (37). Cockhaise Cottages Lindfield was charged with bigamously marrying Freda Grace Elphick, Park View, Hurstmonceux at Brighton on Dec 9. The legal wife said she left her husband on Dec 9 and took up work as a housekeeper because she could not carry on farming work. Her husband could not trace her and he went through a form of marriage with another woman in order to induce witness to disclose her address. She returned to live with her husband on Jan 26 and they were very happy.
Freda Elphick said she met accused through a matrimonial agency. He described himself as a widower. Wyatt was alleged to have said that, because he failed to trace his wife, he decided that the only thing he could was to marry again, to 'bring her out.'
He was committed for trial at Sussex Assizes.

Kay's story has them living at Treemans Cottages, Lewes Rd.
It says 'Mrs Wyatt , who had a serious mental breakdown, was continually nagged by her husband and elder son, who complained that the rations in the house were not sufficient.'

But Florence Emma wyatt is her name on the certificate?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 16 Mar 2021 20:49

No -
it's NOT looking like Florence married Douglas .

There is no record of such a marriage in England, Wlaes, or Scotland, as we've already said.

They may perhaps have lived together unmarried - or perhaps they only had a short relationship, but Douglas was willing to be named as the father.

Caris

Caris Report 16 Mar 2021 20:42

Thank you.. on the birth certificate it's looking like Florence Emma Wyatt married Douglas dad Douglas J wyatt.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 16 Mar 2021 20:34

Some possibilities for the birth of Florence -
BUT as we don't know her age when Douglas was born, or where she came from, so we can only guess:

BLAKE, FLORENCE EMMA mmn KINCH
GRO Reference: 1906 D Quarter in PORTSMOUTH Volume 02B Page 450

BLAKE, FLORENCE EMMA mmn ELLIOTT
GRO Reference: 1908 S Quarter in PORTSMOUTH Volume 02B Page 401

But there are a number of Florence E Blakes too, in various places 1912-16, and we don't know their middle names.

Hmm interesting. Is there any info on who the Carpenter family are then who Douglas lived with other than what is already mentioned?

Can you tell me who parents are to Florence E blake plz

"It [ the workhouse ] became the Cuckfield Poor Law Institution at the end of the first world war and then in 1930 became the West Hylands Institution as it was built on the western part of the Highlands Estate. The main work of the Institution was the care of acute and chronic sick, the elderly ambulant infirm, mentally subnormal and “casuals”.

"During the '30s the number of vagrants dwindled and West Hylands was upgraded and was now able to care for acutely ill medical cases as well as maternity, children and infectious diseases."
