Shirley, I know Sarah Taylor married William Woods 0n 30 July 1837 at Alconbury Weston, she already had some children under the name of Taylor and then had 4 children with William Woods!!
Rose, I will try and find out about Eliza on her Fathers death certificate, her name and address if possible. Thank-you

A tree on ancestry has Rebecca father as William Woods

Maybe that’s significant

Edit. But?

Thank-you for all your replies, I will digest all this information. I did know about the name being Taylor and then changed to Woods. My Gt Grandmother Florence Kate was Fred's sister and he also changed her name, though I have never managed to find out why. Eliza was using surname of Woods at the time of her fathers death, this info came from a relative. Thank-you once again Teresa

Teresa -
you say, "Eliza was present at the death of her Father Henry Briggs 16-06-1900".

I take it that means she was using the surname Woods at that time ?

It's strange that in all the censuses Eliza's birthplace is Sheffield - it's not just a one-off mistake.
But maybe just late registration as you suggest, GG.

Eliza born Notts. rather than Sheffield? Or just registered late -

1871 census with family in Retford also shows born Sheffield

There's always the possibility that Eliza didn't die, but that she and Fred separated, possibly before 1901.
She may have been living with another man in later censuses, using the other man's name.

Fred says he's widowed in the 1911 census, but that may just have been for respectability.

I have Frederick Thomas Woods marries Eliza Briggs Sept qtr 1889 Retford Notts. In 1891 census they are living with Fred's Mother Rebecca and have baby Beatrice 0 years. In1901 census Fred 33, Beatrice 10 living with Rebecca, no Eliza. In 1911 I have Fred Woods 43 Widower and Beatrice Grace 1, Rebecca passed away in 1910. I have searched for a death of Eliza and cannot find anything.( Eliza was present at the death of her Father Henry Briggs 16-06-1900 ) Could her death have been missed from the records?? Am very curious to find out what happened to Eliza. Thank-you if anyone has any input. Teresa.
