I am looking for Susannah Roberts parents born 1886 Friskney on her marriage to William Jarnell in Friskney 1907 it stated her father as John Henry Roberts on the 1901 it says she is living with her adopted parents Charles and Sarah Hoyles? I see someone else is researching this line on ancestry dies it’s give any detail of her being adopted please?

1939 says housewife 5/10/1884 with husband William Jarnell 4/8/1878 but trees on ancestry have him as died 1918.

I think the one who died 1918 was William Jarnell born 1896 Gainsborough to William and Sarah nee Thompson.
On army records it states mum Sarah and on his effects it names brother John W.

No, there are no details - just the bare sentence "She was adopted".

Most trees on Ancestry say she was born in 1886, but the one which says she was adopted gives her DOB as 6 Oct 1884, in Boston, Lincs.

It gives a link to a GRO Index page - but if she's on that page, she wasn't registered as Roberts.
Friskney comes under Spilsby reg district.


However, the censuses (1891-1911) all say she was born in Boston, although she lived in Friskney.

If she was registered as Roberts, with no mms, that ought to mean that her mother's surname was Roberts - not her father's. (Unless they both happened to be called Roberts.)

In 1891 she's with Betsy Ann Beecham (nee Lilley), who is a sister of Sarah Hoyles who became Susannah's adoptive mother per 1901 census:

"Adoption" would just have been an informal affair.
It clearly didn't involve her chainging her name to Hoyles.

Susan/Susanna Lilley 1865 sister to Betsy and Sarah Rebecca Lilley

Susanna/Susan died 14/1/1899 probate £332.1s to Charles Creasy Hoyles,just wondering if that was for upkeep of Susan/Susannah Roberts.
Maybe Susan 1865's daughter!! But I don;t know why she should have Roberts surname

That's a very appealing theory, Mary, especially with the name Susanna.
The child looked after by her aunt Betsy in 1891 because her mother wasn't well enough to do so, and then "adopted" by 1901 by her other aunt Sarah after her mother's death.

If it were my search, I'd be very tempted to buy the Roberts birth cert to see what it says.
