Richard Potter, born Dawlish 1875?

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Gillikins Report 25 Sep 2020 15:51

Richard Potter appears as grandson in 1881
Dinneford street,Thorverton , Tiverton. RD Devon
George Wreford. 63. Mason's labourer. B. Morchard bishop
Jane Wreford. 60. "
Laura Wreford. 15. Thorverton
RIchard Potter. 5. Grandson. Dawlish

I cannot see how he is related to George!
HIs children were ...
Mary Ann 1843 Morchard bishop
Fanny 1845 born same
SImon 1847. Thorverton
Eliza 1849. Thorverton
Laura Jane. 1865

Trying to trace Richard, he may appear in Yorkshire as a 15 yr. old lodger, born Devonshire, and 1901 as HM Dock labourer age 25, in devonport.

I can't find a birth for him to identify his parent.

If he is Frank Richard potter age 34 in 1911 admittedly born Dawlish, I lose him after that, so his beginning and end are a mystery so far.

Ideas welcome ..
:-D

Thank you for your research.. So it's NOT Frank Richard Potter.

so you see my problem with Richard Potter's birth registration and identity as grandson.

Could he be called grandson if he was adopted/taken in?
One generation down, Simon, George's son, did "take in" An orphaned niece.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 25 Sep 2020 17:29

People weren't always as precise back then about relationships.

They may smply have taken in an orphan and given him the status of grandson.

1891 seems to me that Richard Milford and Jane lane married in Wales in 1866. I've only just noticed that Richard was from Thorverton.
You'll see that George lived in Thorverton where Simon and Laura were born.

But I ve still not sorted the relationship between George and grandson.
But hopeful. :- ;-)

I doubt very much that there was ANY connection between them

All the daughters of George and Jane are old enough to be Richard's Mother except Laura, as are both sons. Maybe a son admitted paternity and child was raised with his family but registered under Mother's surname? Or just not registered

Gillikins Report 25 Sep 2020 19:11

That seems possible,
Oddly I have an ongoing conspiracy theory...
Presuming the potter person was in Thorverton in 1871, I started looking for a possibly parent.
I did find a Sydney potter in Thorverton 1871... Age 15 then and born Islington. . On trial for an apprentice. He is in the household of ...
Thomas Milford. 42 Thorverton
Elisabeth Milford 40 Thorverton
Frederick 13 same
Kate 11 same
Ellen same
Annie 4 same
Elisabeth 0 Thorverton
Sydney Potter 15 Islington

In 1861 he seems to be in clerkenwell, st James, St. John street
Rebecca Potter, head 25 broad Clyst Devon
Alfred s potter son 5 Islington
And a male and female servant

Strange that these are Milfords also from Thorverton.
Perhaps he is the father,
