Just to let you know I've got the marriage certificate and yes it was a church wedding
St Chads Catholic Church Manchester 23 Aug 1916
Thomas Duff 25 Bach Widow cleaner 8 Derby St Cheetham father Robert Duff Friut Seller
Ellen Kelly 19 Spin Cap Machinist 8 Davison St Manchester father John Dec Firewood Dealer Wit :-John Roscoe & Catherine Duff
From this I've managed to get 1901 & 1911 census BUT in 1911 their is mother Ellen and Ellen Daughter ( the one from the marriage) then a son Michael Kellicher ??1881 it looks as though he has been married 5 yrs

It has ellen the mother has been married 20yrs had 11 children lost 8
1901 it has John and daughter Mary 1888

Don't understand why the name is different unless she was married before

If it is an RC marr, then it's still worth checking out the parish register, as it will differ from the official marr cert.
It will obviously Latinize the names, but can give other info. E.g.,

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1840
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Year Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
MCCANN Patrick HEATON Hannah 1840 Wigan, Register Office or Registrar Attended Wigan & Leigh ROW/1/144

Marriage: 7 Jan 1840 St John RC, Wigan, Lancs.
Patricium McCann -
Hannam Heaton -
Groom's Parents: Samuelis McCann, de Drogheda in Hibernia & Bergittae
Bride's Parents: Danielis Heaton, de Comtu. Carloviensi in Hibernia & Hannae
Witness: Edwardo Diamond; Birgitta Smith
Married by: T. Dilworth M.A.
Register: Marriages 1837 - 1840, Page 53
Source: Original register at LRO

Here we see the mothers' names (Bridget/Hannah), and also where they came from -
Drogheda for the McCanns, and Co Carlow for the Heatons.

Pre-1898, only CofE, jews, quakers and the registrars were authorized to keep official marr rego's.
All other non-conformist marrs would need a registrar to attend with his official marr rego which the couple could sign to complete the ceremony.
Post-1898, anyone could apply to be authorized to keep an official marr rego,
So after, say, 1903, all non-conformist churches that wanted were authorized apart from new churches that were in the process of becoming authorized.
However, the RCs chose not to apply until abt 1970-ish in Lancs, and 1980-ish elsewhere.

You can't be certain that the marriage was in a Register Office

Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Year Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
DUFF Thomas KELLY Ellen 1916 Manchester Register Office or Registrar Attended Archives+, Manchester Central Library MCR_RM/185/85

Which probably means, in view of their names, a Roman Catholic Church

Just in case anyone who doesn't know about certs on SP happens to read this thread -

images of certs can be viewed/printed at a cost of 6 credits (£1.50) each, if the event was more than
100 years ago for births
75 years for marriages
50 years for deaths

More recent certs can be bought via SP for £12.
BUT not at present, due to lockdown.

ONLY C of E marriage certs can be viewd anywhere other than a Records Office, or, as in this case, Manchester Library

You will have to buy the cert to see the details - or visit the appopriate venue when current restrictions are lifted.

Nothing has changed with regard to accessing such info

Could some one help me with a Register office Marriage When I look on Lancashire BMD I found a marriage that interested me clicking on the Number at the side as if to buy it the next page has that you can buy it but also it stored at Manchester Library does this mean the actual marriage certificate it there to view or is it just the register that I can get on Ancestry

I know years ago you had to buy them just wondered if it has altered
