I have found William Fair b 1872 in Auchtermuchty, Cupar, Scotland, on a passenger list going to Cape, South Africa in 1893.
Would any kind person with a subscription be able to provide me with any more details?
Thank you in anticipation.

It’s not coming up on ancestry or FMP

He seems to be still at home in 1891

Thank you Shirley. I found him on FMP, but couldn’t open the image.
Yes that is the family. William was a tailor.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 24 Apr 2020 09:41

This is presumably a son of the W Fair who went to South Africa:

William George Roberts Fair
in the South Africa, Biographical Index, 1825-2005
Name: William George Roberts Fair
Event Type: Marriage
Birth Date: 31 Mar 1900
Birth Place: Kimberley, Cape Province
Residence Year: 1947-1948
Marriage Date: 1931
Father: W Fair
Mother: Fair
Spouse: Kathleen jessie Kilpatrick
Notes: Other: Deputy Mayor
Page Number: 267

There's also a travel record for him and his wife, going to Southampton in 1960 - but they're going to a London address, so not much help. Would have been nice if they'd been going to Auchtermuchty - or even anywhere in Scotland!

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 24 Apr 2020 09:56

Possibly William 1872 on a later voyage - he's an outfitter, and your William was a tailor in 1891:

Wm Fair
in the UK and Ireland, Outward Passenger Lists, 1890-1960
Name: Wm Fair
Gender: Male
Age: 32
Birth Date: abt 1872
Departure Date: 24 Nov 1904
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Destination Port: Cape Town, South Africa
Ship Name: Afric
Master: J O Carter

Travelling with his wife (unnamed, 31), and children Mammie 6, William, 4 Cathie 2, and John 1.

The child William's age fits with the William George Roberts Fair posted above.
William 1872's parents were Catherine and William - also names of these children.

ArgyllGran, I will be back shortly when I have read your posts, just about to have dinner here in Aus.

Carole Mac

Carole Mac Report 24 Apr 2020 10:42

ArgyllGran, yes definitely my husbands family as he recognises names and children etc.
What we haven’t got is William’s first trip out to South Africa as a single man. He was married in South Africa to Mary Muir in 1898.
We think young John was born during the family trip back to Scotland,
Also the first post is correct.
Thank you so much.

Hmmm, interesting. Thank you Kay. Certainly looks like them. Is it possible to find when they went to UK before returning as above?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 24 Apr 2020 12:20

Took a punt and had a look at what I guessed would be young John's birth cert:

FAIR
JOHN ALEXANDER
M
1903
485/B 71
Logie (Stirling)

John Alexander Fair.
Born 11 Oct 1903 at 9.30pm, at Rockvale, Westerton Drive, Bridge of Allan.
Father: William Fair, master tailor.
Mother: Mary Fair, ms Muir.
Parents' marriage: 1897, Sept 1st, Kimberley, Cape Colony.
Informant: William Fair, father, present at birth.

So having left the UK in May 1899, they obviously came back again before Oct 1903.
Presumably after the 1901 census, as they're not on that.
