"The LB&SCR existed for 76 years until 31 December 1922 [ **** ], when it was wound up as a result of the Railways Act 1921 and merged with the London and South Western Railway and the South Eastern and Chatham Railway to form the Southern Railway."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London,_Brighton_and_South_Coast_Railway

From same link -
in the 19th century -
"Beyond Oxted, the LB&SCR would build its own lines to link with the "Bluebell line" at East Grinstead and its line to Tunbridge Wells."

Re winding up in 1922 -
the ledger containing the 1923 record for F Woodhams ends in Dec 1923 - maybe it took a year to complete the merger, and they still needed employees during that time ?

I think the 'ptr' could be Porter

ArgyllGran Report 10 Apr 2020 11:52

Perhaps "Lad" is no indication of age, but just the name of a lowly rank.

ErikaH Report 10 Apr 2020 11:46

Interestingly, the London Brighton and South Coast Railway passed through Tunbridge Wells

Births Mar 1923 (>99%)
Woodhams Ray Creasey E.Grinstead 2b 206

There's this record - but no way of knowing who this man was - no DOB or other identification:

F Woodhams
in the UK, Railway Employment Records, 1833-1956
Name: F Woodhams
Residence Date [ Appointment Date on image ]: 2 Jul 1923
Station: Victoria
Company: London, Brighton and South Coast
Description: Register of Appointments 1905 - 1913

Occupation looks like Temporary Lad (something - "Ptr" ?) - sounds as if he should be younger than your Frederick.

The trade union membership record is not the right man

You need a copy of his marriage cert to find out his occupation at the time

Hello all
has anyone got access to railway records Hartfield to East Grinstead .
Iam sure i read my grandfather Frederick G Woodhams worked on the railway after the great war.In oct 1922 he married Florence May Creasey who was from East Grinstead .....Freaderick was born and living in Hartfied so i wonder if they met on the railway.
They both later moved to Tunbridge Wells 1929.

This time is a big hole in my G/F history/

I would appreciate any help given .

Barry :-)
