The National Archives have South Lancs Regiment archives - might be worth investigating;

Thanks,

Can anyone make out what his father's occupation is, on the marriage cert?

Looks like Cotton Potton.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 18 Jun 2019 17:04

Yes, exactly.

Makes me wonder if he was born under another name ?
Maybe father's supposed name was invented for respectability reasons ??

Or he was at least using another name until his marriage?
Might have been abroad in the army in 1901.

Philip

Philip Report 18 Jun 2019 16:49

same as you couldn't find him on any census apart from 1911 living in warrington with family ??

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 18 Jun 2019 14:48

Ruling out the one born in Stockport - his mother's maiden surname was Howell.

Father wasn't Ernest, however:

Marriages Mar 1864 (>99%)
Herbert Isaac Staines 3a 23
Howell Ruth Staines 3a 23

I now we're straying away from your request for military records (which, apart from what's been posted above, seem to be among the many military records which didn't survive).

However, as I gather you don't know where he was born or died, he's a challenge!
I don't see an Ernest Herbert with father Ernest, in any census record.
Nor an Ernest Herbert born 1876-9 actually in Birkenhead.

Ernest Herbert Herbert is an odd name anyway - the middle name the same as the last name.

Do you already know anything about his pre-marriage life?

He gives his birth year as 1878 on military form but Stockport is a long way from Birkenhead

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 Jun 2019 20:45

Is this the birth of your Ernest? 1911 says born Birkenhead.

Births Jun 1878 (>99%)
Herbert Ernest Stockport 8a 34

(Just checking the year before searching further for a death.)

The only way to be sure is to buy a copy of the cert .

(I know there was an Ernest Henry Herbert born 1877 in Caterham.)
