Thank You Abby. The marriage details are correct and match the copy marriage cert I have. Except I could not decipher the Church of the Marriage from the document I have. So thank you very much for that. Re the baptism record for James this could be him but on all the census information I have he is recorded as being born in Mastin Moor, Staveley, Derbyshire so I am not sure this is the James I am looking for. I will follow it up further. Many thanks for your help. |

Did the marriage cert give his age, and did it mention the father's occupation in addition to the name? |

If you know his place of birth from the census records, then try the parish registers for the county he was born in. |

Civil registration came into force in July 1837. No BMD events were registered before that date. Penalties for not registering births were imposed from 1875 |

I am researching my Great Great Grandfather born sometime between 1823 and 1829. I have found him, I believe, on census returns from 1851 to 1911 and I have a marriage certificate which gives me his fathers name. However, I can't find a registered birth or christening for him. He was born before registration of births became mandatory. Any ideas where I go from here? I can't properly identifyhis parents and family as I can't be certain about which family to look at on the census information for 1841, he doesn't appear to feature at all on the returns of likely families i.e with the name of his father as detailed on his marriage cert. He had most probably left home by 1841 to work for or to be apprenticed as a blacksmith. If anyone has any ideas as to how I can proceed with this search it would be much appreciated. I hope I have posted this in the correct place. |
