Assuming John senior was born in Fife (an assumption only based on the fact that his sons were born there) there are also possible births in Markinch, Dysart, and Ballingry, which are nearer (or at least no further from) Leslie than Abdie is.

Or, bearing the Inverkeithing link in mind, there's this one;

STEEL
JOHN
JAMES STEEL/ISOBEL GIBSON
M
25/10/1801
432/
20 167
Inverkeithing

and this:

STEEL
JOHN
JAMES STEEL/GRIZEL EDWARD FR2994 (FR2994)
M
27/04/1811
424/
90 192
Dunfermline

Also , his first son (or at least the first we know about) was named James - possibly after his own father ??

He could have been born anywhere between c1780 and c1826.
Isabella was obviously of child-bearing age, but John could have been considerably older, for all we know.

Hi Genes Reunited people.

My brick wall for many years is my GG grandfather John Steele. Little is known of him other then on his son's wedding certificate was listed his parents, as John Steele mill worker and mother Isabella Douglas. No dates for either of them. Apparently they had 2 sons James born in 1843 in Leslie, Fife, and my gg grandfather John born in 1845. one birth source says Leslie, and another says Inverkeithing, Fife. Johns Jrs wedding certificate says both parents were deceased. John Jr, and Margaret Green were married in 1876, in the parish of Eastwood in Renfrew.

Years of birth are derived from 1851 census Inverkeithing, John 6 years old and James 8 years old. Both living with a Mrs. Moodie, and board ,lodging, and schooling paid by the parish.

The closest person that I can find for John Sr. is a John born to William Steele and Helen Fergus living in Abdie Fife which is 12 miles from Leslie. John was born in 1808. He was the 4th child in the family. First child was William.

The mills that were in Leslie were mostly about making paper and products to make paper. There is good information on the paper mill on line. It has left Leslie in 2007 to consolidate with another mill in Kirkudbrite,

If anyone has a source of information on the people of Leslie in the 1800 to 1850 I would greatly appreciate their help.

I do use Scotlands people for information also other genealogy sites.

Thank you for any help with this conundrum.

Cheers,

Jack Steele

HI. I have been looking for information on my GG grandfather for years. But I do not have much knowledge of FIFE in the 1700 to 1850 time frame. If anyone had particular knowledge of the area I would really like to pick their brains if possible.
