mgnv...I have looked at all variations and possibilities..eg Magdelena/ with i's and e's...Serena etc... nothing comes up and certainly not with such a specific birthdate.

My wife's aunt Lena is named after her aunt Selina (sometimes spelled Ceina)..
Maybe your Lena is short for something else.

I have found a passenger list that states that Lena Kildea born 1899 left Southampton on 9.12.1920 on board ship Pakeha bound for Lyttleton, New Zealand. I don't know when she left NZ for Victoria. The only document her grandson has sent me is the Death certificate for Lena's daughter, Eileen Allen. It gives Lena's maiden name as Gildaire. I cannot understand why Lena is not mentioned on any census or birth record.

I have emailed Tony, Lena's grandson and am awaiting a reply.

Looking at the names of the children I wondered if Lena was in fact Helena, but the birth date doesn't match.

Here is the 1911 for that family but no Lena?

Anne. You need to find out from Lena's grandson if he has her Birth/Baptismal Cert.or from what source he has a specific Birthdate....
When did Lena go to Australia..was she alone or with Family...?

I was told by Lena's grandson that she was the youngest of fifteen children and that she was born on 20/4/1900 in County Clare.

Anne...You don't say where you obtained the exact date of birth for Lena Gertrude Gildea and that she was one of 15 children to Michael and Mary.....

Like the others I have been unable to find any birth to correspond with info.you have posted ..the following is what I have found and may be "Lena's" family although where the Gertrude comes in I don't know....

The above family are still there 1911 Census (cannot access site at present)..

State they have been married 43yrs and have had 14 children 6 still living...
"Ellen" is now Helena and they list their place of birth as Co Clare ...

Further searching around shows Michaels wife to be Mary Tierney .

Haven't had time to look for the others but the ones listed were all Baptised in Clonrush which was the Civil Parish for Whitehead...

Whitegate is abt 10km E of Scarriff, and abt 1km from the shore of Lough Derg which forms the boundary between Clare & Tipperary Abt 2km N of Whitegate is Co Galway, so then the Lough forms the boundary between Galway & Tipperary.

I can only confirm that she died in Australia in 1979, but like you I have been unable to find any reference to her family in Ireland. Would you suggest that I contact the Registry office covering County Clare?

I can't see the family on the 1901 or 1911 census in Ireland.
