I'm looking for any information on the above who was murdered I believe in 1830 in Maryport. I have found the newspaper cuttings of his death. But I would like to find his DOB and any family info.
He is I believe my dads great grandfather. I have tried all avenues but as you can imagine there are a lot of William Brown's. I do know he came from Dearham.
I'm getting very confused

Thanks for any help
Lesley

Hi Lesley and welcome to the boards.
It would be very helpful if you can tell us how you worked back to William - I assume you have a marriage cert for one of his children?
If you can tell us everything you know about that person it would be really useful.

A tree on Ancestry has him born 1779 in Dearham (Cumberland) and marrying an Ann Walker in 1803, would that be correct?
They have parents John Brown and Jane Osborn, but no evidence for this is provided so treat with caution!

I'm afraid it is word of mouth at moment, I'm waiting for the info of my cousin. I'm also going to Dearham this weekend to see if I can find out more. Sorry all new to this. As my family have all gone and nobody seems to know much. Not very helpful I know

Lesley, there is only one way to do this research and that is to work back methodically, starting with what you know as fact. This might be as recent as your grandparents' marriage, for example.
While family stories can help, they have to be backed up with evidence.
You do not say if you have any certs, or how you have come to believe this William is related. You definitely need the occasional cert unless you have very unusual names to work with.
Until you have done this there is no point visiting Dearham or anywhere else.

Doesn't the newspaper cutting say how old the man was when he died?

And whether or not he had a wife?

The name is so common that you need every scrap of info..................

Who was your father's grandparent? The one who you think was the child of the murdered man?

When and where was he/she born?

Who - and when - did he/she marry?

Do you have the marriage cert?

Don't rely on anyone else's 'info'.......................do your own research....................and verify it every step of the way

Have you tried working back from your father?

Can we help you to do so?

Lancaster Gazette of 30 January 1830 just says Mr Brown had a wife and several children. No age mentioned.
